Loud knocking sound, new engine and still knocking

Hello, my 95 disco had a rather loud knocking sound which sounded like it was coming from the bottom end of the engine, so i replaced it with a 4.0 short block. The truck is still making the knocking sound even with teh new engine, so i guess it wasnt the engine knocking. I thought it might be the catalytic converters but the knocking seemed so loud i didnt think it could be them. The truck makes the knocking sound at idle and also as the engine revs so does the knocking. The knocking sounds like a tin can rattle sometimes, which makes me lean towards the cats. What else could this knocking be if its not in the engine?

I have a rather loud tapping sound. It is from a crack in the weld where the exhaust flange is on the down pipe, catalytic side.

Check there.

Derek,
You should have put your questions in the same post. That you have a loud knocking noise as well as a loss of power. I'm sure they are related.

OK So now I have a Knock too. I am out the door tonight but ....I will need to drive the truck 500 plus miles from Norman to Houston on Friday.

The knock I just noticed tonight in ALL gears after a 45 mile drive. Popped the hood and it is coming from the engine somewhere (more so from the left passenger side)?!? The rover will be parked for this week but I need to figure out the Knock before friday. Why Henry why??

Henry (1998 D1) has 85K miles...I am a SeaFoam Whore (LOL), I run 93octane gas, new cats, newish Lambda Sensors, new fuel pump, I do need to change the oil though, will do this on Thursday ..Any thoughts. I just noticed the Knock tonight when I parked the truck and heard the noise from inside the cab?
If it is the oil pick up tube would I not get a flicker from the oil light? No codes either. Thanks everyone..You guys really help me out!! RoverChic

EDIT: I do not have a new engine (gulp ...yet) ...I did not want to start a new thread. Also I checked the bolts and tightened them on the exhaust manifold(s).

I have the same problem and have had it second, third, fourth and fifth opinioned and all agree that it's lifters. I didn't believe it because it's more like a knock, but not loud enough to be a rod kinda knock. It was explained to me that one of my lifters has probably collapsed and that is why the noise is so much louder than your standard lifter "tic". As an option, one shop that I trust very much, said to also check for a loose rocker before doing the lifters. My plans got foiled today for checking the rocker arms, so will be doing that later this week. And my lifters in a few weeks when I have a few days to be without a vehicle.

I have driven with mine making this noise since April. My disclaimer is that I'm not recommending that you do that of course. But if you can confirm it's your lifters then you are probably safe to make your trip. But then again, it's really up to Henry. ;)

Jen

p.s. I also have no codes, no flickering oil light, good oil pressure, noise kinda reminds me of a diesel engine when I sit at idle with the windows down if that sounds similar to your noise.

Thanks Jen!! Jen is my little sisters name too. I think Henry will be ok ..Trey called and in usual fashion Henry would not make the noise with Trey on the phone!?!? Damn, Rover has a mind of his own!! Bastard!? ;) We think it is exhaust related.

I will keep everyone posted once I have a chance to give Henry some loving! :)

Check the catalytic converters, thats what mine ended up being. The knock was soo loud and consistant that i figured it had to be a rod knock. Put a new Y pipe on and all was good.

Chic: Its' probably either the collector gasket on the exhaust down pipe, or given the year of yours, a crack in the passenger manifold. Last spring rover actually made a recall for a very narrow list of VIN's, so you may want to check it out. Take it to an exhaust shop and see what they say.

use a stethescope to help isloate the area in which the knock is occuring. this will help in finding out if it is in the bottom end or top end. hope it helps

Eddie: Oh no sleeve??  Just my Rover luck...

The overall general theme here is the exhaust system. It is a knock deep knock for sure. The Rover was a part of the recall Andrew ..Gosh maybe it cracked again. I looked for a crack but is not seen by the naked eye. I am going to drive it to Houston anyway...If you here about me on the news ..LOL

Someone has promised me their engine if Henry bites the big one!?! He even said that he would deliver it himself. :D

Thanks again guys...I will keep you posted as always! RoverChic

Exhaust

Let me know if it turns out to be an exhaust leak...I know someone who has a barely used exhaust manifold (also has new gasket sets too) that you may be able to get for a good deal.

On that little knocking sound... once the engine has cooled down, take a rubber mallet and slide under the truck, then begin tapping your cats, I mean the convertors. :D
These cats when they go will make a racket and yes, mine sounded just like ticking.
If they are bad you will hear the material inside rattle around as you bang on the cats.
I am going to have a friend cut these open and remove the catalyst, then reseal.

Yo Jen, missed you at the Florida Land Rover Club Rally... You said you were going to go, remember? Hit the board, now that the cooler weather is rolling in, our weekend trips to various haunts starts to increase.

I was there, I promise!

Hey Bruce, sorry I missed you too. I hung out with the guy in the dark blue/black Disco with the diamond plate on his hood for a little bit sat. night and I think you were close to that area too? I was the short blonde that won the snatch block and the hi-lift. :) $10 worth of raffle tickets and I walked away with close to $150 in goodies!

Not sure if you made it to the night ride or not...but I was the stock truck (the only stock foolish enough I reckon) and went with the first group on the "ridiculous" trail as they called it. You guys definately like to go swimming so I think my first upgrade, other than more recovery gear, will be a snorkel! lol

I was only able to come up for saturday since I wasn't able to find a dog-sitter for my zoo. Hopefully, I can bribe someone into watching the "kids" so I can make a full weekend for the spring rally. I'll keep checking the site too...we made friends with some of the folks from Manatee so I'll gonna try to catch a few with them soon I hope.

See ya in the water!

Hypothetically speaking..Lets assume that a rod a has let go in the engine. Could one make a 450 mile drive with no worries? Or should one not assume that the Rover will make it there in one piece??
