I am looking to pick up a disco for my wife and I.... We may want to
do some offroading, tons of snowshoeing, camping, but not tons of
miles on the vehicle.. Would like to spend around 8k (could spend
more but 8k fits the budget nicely..) Have seen some decent 95-96
Discos, am curious why it seems that 97-98 are so much more money.
All help is GREATLY appreciated as we are current BMW owners and help
out on the bmw forums, but don't know much about Rovers.... Thank You
in advance for all the help... and info.... we are in Oregon, and
would love to attend any and all (somewhat local) events etc....
Thanks again in advance for all the help...

looking for offroad vehicle (NOT IMPRESSED BY FORD OR CHEVY FOR SURE)
LOVE THE WAY ROVERS LOOK AND FEEL...

Herby,

My advice is to look, look, look! I spent about three months really looking for my Rover (Sally) and I got a great deal (I believe.) She is a 97' SE with 110xxx and I paid $5100 with tax. I also got about four years of prior service history with the truck and that was super important to me. So to sum it up; look, look, look and get a vehicle with a service history.

Brian, El Cid is right. look, look some more then keep looking. There are good deals out there. I love my 95 but it's mostly an off roader and i don't care how it handles on the street or if it has navigation dvd. what part of Oregon are you from? I just did a trip to the Tillamook forest and had a blast. There is a Seattle/Portland base club know as pacific northwest rovers. There is also a small one here in Bend as well. I'm sure there are others I'm missing. Heck we were talking about making a sons of Norway rover club :D

Make sure to ask questions on this site.

Cheers Andy 95 d1

Some say the 4.0 engines in 98s have less problems. I think finding one with a service history with LR is worth a bunch, regardless of year. My experience with buying used vehicles and owning many vehicles is knowing that it was taken care of. Not just with service, but having problems addressed quickly is also important. Some people know somethings wrong, but wait until it progresses and gets worse or spreads to other systems of the vehicle. Take your time and find the one you want. I would pay $12k for a 99 Disco with service history / maintenance records than one without at $6k. I searched for 6 months and finally found a one owner 98 w/69k that had a complete history with the dealership. I have had a few things go wrong, but most are to be expected; O2 sensor, water pump, window regulator, etc. The best thing about the D1 is it is extremely easy to work on.

I have a 1998 D1. Henry (my Rover) and I have had our moments to say the least. If I had to do it all over again, I would certainly look for a 1999 D1 SD model with less than 50K in additional to all records. This was my first Discovery and I have owned previous Rovers (88 RRC SWB and 95 RRC LWB)..In hindsight I would have looked around more before I bought my 1998 Disco. Best of luck to you!!

If going with a Disco I, I like the '95 with the 3.9. Super easy to work on and I see just as many 4.0's with issues. Take a look at Robinsons Service website (easy seach on the net). He gives excellent information regarding finding and purchasing a Discovery. The DII's are better road vehicles. I've had my '95 D1 for a year and a half and have had good performance overall.

I'm also a BMW owner. I picked up sweet '94 BMW 525i with 31K miles six months ago. BMW makes an incredible vehicle!
