I found myself in Pepboys looking at the same tire. Yes, you can get a good sized tire, with what looks to be a pretty good tread, for cheap. The thing that got me was the side walls. The side walls on these tires are thin. I have some cuts in my side walls that would have left me stranded if I had the dakota MT. The guy their said the were only a 2 ply, but you dealing with Pepboys. You never know if they know what they are talking about.

Saying Michelin does not make some of the best tires on the market is like saying Diane Lane is a pig.

Maxxis? LOL. We used some of that junk on our training trucks. They were garbage.

whats your choice of tires, if I may ask?

Some of them are made by Cooper, some in the past were made by Michelin.
The LT265/75R16 still carry E load rating; last time I looked, it had 3072 pounds max load per tire at 80psi. Sounds plenty to me.

I actually liked the tread pattern on Definity Dakota M/Ts. The price was about $112 per tire for 265/75; I just might get them instead of BFG MTs.

I sure do understand the Pepboys doesn't make their tires, but more importantly, I understand that BFG doesn't make their tires.

I have Michelin Cross Terrains on my truck now, just waiting for them to wear out. Everytime I pop one a vibration goes away. :applause:

EDIT: p_m posted Michelin makes BFGs... found it's true on wikipedia. But they make different quality tires across many brands to cover the entire market. So my decision is based on what kind of reputation the brand has + personal experience with that brand. The BFG brand has the best rep for running BAJA among all those I know who travel there and have been the best tires I've owned. p_m thanks for that info.

There is no magic tire. I've had all kinds and no one brand is the be all of tires. There are certainly brands I'd stay away from and others that tend to produce quality tires across the board.

CleanD - What is wrong with tires with "only 2 ply" sidewalls?

Yep most all radial mudders are no more than 2 ply. One has to go to a bias to jump up with the sidewall plies.

You are right Garrett, there is no perfect tire. What you get in one area you usually give up in another. It just depends on how you use your truck and how much highway comfort AND GAS MILEAGE you want to give up for offroad traction and strength or visa versa. There are a few happy medium tires out there. Personally I'm sold on TSL radials (second set).

My "TrailCutter RT's" are made by Cooper..... does that mean they are a Cooper tire? Not really.

Kind of like anything these days, there are different levels of stuff all made by the same company.

That said I love my tires and feel they are one of the best *values* out there. They are as good as any tire i have used in all conditions (for an AT) and they had what felt like a hefty sidewall - plus they were $89 each SHIPPED to me in a 255-85-16.

Personally for the $$ I would buy them over and over.... but next time I will spend a little more for a better tire only because I'd like a little more aggressive tread.

I shall spend my hard earned coin on either Maxxis or BFG KM2, good luck with not tearing the cooper/michelin/pep boys crap on slickrock and lava flows, which is where any tire is really put to the test, over jagged terrain 100 miles from anywhere ya get cell phone service

shit, I say, like the firestones and the cum-ho's

Have you ever ran the Firestone MTs? It doesn't sound like you know what you're talking about. Only regurgitate what you hear.

FWIW maxis bighorns are Okay at best. Their creepy crawler is pretty bad ass though.

I've seen the Firestone MT's loose entire lugs (several and the patch of rubber under them) and cut the sidewalls on rocks. Not recently though, they may have changed the rubber compound or something since then (like 5 years ago)...

A good cheaper tire (if they are still made) is the Peerless Widetrack Baja MT.. I haven't seen anyone running them in a while so I don't know if they are still cheap or even made but they seemed pretty tough and gave pretty good traction..

PepBoys used to have a mud tire - IIRC, called "Futura Enforcer."
I had a set - very tough sidewall, fairly heavy, hard to balance, excellent on the rocks due to very soft compound - and, for the same reason, very short-lived.

I ran these tires on my D1 back in 2001- 265/75 16. It was my daily driver and my off road rig. I put over 50k miles, it was my first rover and first time off road so I beat them up real good. I drove to Moab, California and back on the East Coat trails. They held up extremely well and never lost any lugs, never got a flat. I don't know if the pepboys tires are still made that tuff but I would seriously consider them even now, they were made by Cooper back then.

Four rovers later and now with a LWB RRC I am running Maxxis Mudders MT's 245/75/ 16. These are really great tires but I would not buy them new, too expensive. I bought them almost new a for a really great price (about one week old). They don't feel like MT's on road and have excellent traction off road. Now time for 235/85 16's.

I have personally seen enough of the Firestones missing chunks of rubber that I dont need to experience these for myself.

caveat emptor

ya know, Maxxis makes some great tires fro ATVs, Mtn Bikes and MTs for trucks that are wheeled. They have a great price point and I trust my life to them, more so than any BFG, I am not fond of BFGs really, I tried my 1st set recently and am selling off a pair before i use them up completely, to go with them I have matching 'new' maxxis

I will like replace the set with a new set of maxxis

but what do I know? nothing, so dont listen to me:smilelol:

dont try to follow me or my line either, those who have usually bust their shit anyways:bigok:

Both of these were posted the same day.

What the F did you do in less than a day(22 minutes) to decide that BFGs are garbage?
