idle

(99 DII) Ok...I posted earlier about an odd idle and a type of knocking. I was told to check all hoses, etc to make sure there were no loose ends....done. Everything was fine. I wanted to also look at the possibility of replacing the 02 sensors but I didn't want to if it really wasn't the problem. Could it be a dirty stepper motor? Any other suggestions? Thanks guys.

addition

Forgot to add that the computer threw a code that said the truck was running to lean.

SITUATION:

ROUGH RUNNING SYMPTOMS AND POSSIBLE MIL ILLUMINATION

The customer may experience rough running and possibly a MIL light illumination. Upon investigation of the MIL light, the P-codes will indicate a lean mixture.

RESOLUTION:

INSPECT AND REPLACE PLASTIC CAP

The plastic cap covering the intake plenum vacuum port may deteriorate and leak. Inspect to verify that a split cap is the cause of the problem and replace the cap with the new part.

PARTS INFORMATION:

LKD000020 Vacuum Port Cap Qty 1

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

30.25.89/26 Time 0.20 hrs.
Inspect for missing or damaged cap and install vacuum new cap

30.25.89/27 Time 0.45 hrs.
Confirm lean mixture using TestBook, clear codes and install new vacuum cap

FAULT CODE: N

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSPECT AND INSTALL NEW PLUG

1. If a MIL is illuminated, connect TestBook and investigate the cause of the problem.

2. If vacuum leak is suspected inspect plastic vacuum port cap (Figure 1 Position 1) for cracks or crazing.

3. Replace a damaged or missing vacuum cap with the new style cap (LKD000020).

4. Clear fault codes and verify that symptoms have been corrected.

need a bit more information. does the problem show during initial warm up ( open loop/closed loop)? After long trips at constant RPM? Are you having any other drivability problems? As already mentioned, one of the most common, simplest causes for a lean condition and rough idle is a vacuum leak. I know you said you checked everything. However, to be certain, disconnect each vacuum line at the MANIFOLD (one at a time) and plug the hole with your finger. If idle improves, the problem is with that line, if it doesn't improve, keep going. Its never a bad idea to double check. I'm stressing this because usually if you're suffering a lean condition, other components have failed and will throw their own MIL (i.e. injectors not firing, which will also throw a lean misfire code, in addition to you feeling the miss during driving). 02 senors could be a possibility, however, 02 sensors do not come into play until you've entered closed loop. So if you have this problem during warm up, its a safe assurance to say its not your 02 sensors (plus they'd throw a MIL). So go over everything one last time, inspect other simple things you may have missed, like plug wires & plugs.

rough

Now that I think of it, when I took a vacuum line off to inject seafoam...the truck did start to run better (of course it was plugged). The rough idle and knocking starts as the truck is started. The service light has been on for some time now. But the only code i pulledwas the lean code. I also have a type of hesitation when I hit the gas...so I guess that's where I got the O2 idea from. I really appreciate the info.

I had the problem with rough idle and engine knocking. I just replaced all the O2 sensors and everything is ok now. Truck runs like it's brand new.

codes

Where you throwing any fault codes? If so, what were they?

rough idle, hesitation, knocking

I tryed disconnecting most of the hoses. Am I plugging up the hose or the manifold? when I this one hose off and don't plug up anything....it idles fine. I only disconnected like three hoses....could you be a little more specific on what to look at. The board is under "idle" in the search icon
