So here is the scoop. Got a new IAC put on my 5-speed D1 because the idle was so eratic. Guy puts it on says the dealership has to use their computer to re-program mine for the thing to work right. This sound right?

try to position the "plunger (for lack of proper word)" close to the same position as the old one that was removed, install and let the ecu do the rest! it will self adjust!

have you driven the truck since replacement? why did you pay a mechanic to do this....its 2 bolts and a clip! maybe you should tell us more! sounds like the iac wasnt the problem and the "mechanic" is at a loss?????

enjoy!

Because when you say that I don't really know what you are talking about. The truck wa having other work done on it and I told him about the high idle, picked up an IAC and he put it on for me. I don't even know where the IAC is so I'm not to sure where to start.

Yes its on and Yes I have the truck. Driven maybe 10 miles with the new one.

Well not having any tools at school and not having a place to work on my truck hinders the work I can do. Like new brake pads and rotors which is what it was in for in the first place.

Well before it was way high and at stop light would start off low and gradually make it was to about 2300. Now the highest its been is about 1500. the guy told me it be reset back to normal with the dealership computer. Thats why I got on here, looking for some trick to not have go to the dealership and mess with all that

OK, for a start if you can't do this very easy piece of work yourself firstly find a mechanic who isn't a fucking bald faced liar tryin to pull the wool over your eyes!!!!!

Sounds like the high idle speed [which is way too high] is not the fault of the IAC - it simply can't pull the idle speed low enough......could be a vacuum leak letting in too much air.

Have a look around for any loose or missing hoses hissing and letting in air......get a yard of garden hose and use it like a stethoscope to find any leaks - watch out for spinning fan and pulleys and belts!

The IAC is basically self adjusting when you install a new one, although you can help by roughly turning it in/out to same setting as old one.

What he told me he did was adjust it but the lowest high range he got was 1500, which it has not gone above since the replacement. So I'll get the garden hose out and listen/look for vac leaks later today. The new iac has definately helped though.

take a propane torch (turned on but not lit...lol) and run it around all of your vacuum lines slow like. if there is a leak....the engine will rev at that spot! most of the time you can get away with trimming some of the rotted hose off and reconnecting!

enjoyer!
