No, not the wife, she's okay. The problem is that it requires alot of force to manually pull out the line. And YES, I have the lever set the correct way.:p The unit is a 9000# Superwinch , about a year and a half old. Any ideas on the problem or how to fix it? Other than buying another winch.:ack:

According to EE (thanks Ho), Superwinch and other planetary winches can get in a bind from a side pull, especially if the winch mounting holes are the slotted style and not drilled specifically for the winch. The load will cause one side of the winch to move very slightly, resulting in the winch not free-spooling like it should. You might try loosening the mounting bolts and tweaking the position of your winch with a prybar to one side or the other.

i have a ep9 and i called superwinch's tech line regarding a similar problem. they said that it's just part of how their winches are. the tech said that it will get easier to free spool with use.

also, the advise from EE is also helpful.

Thanks for all the responses. The only water it has seen is heavy rain and few big splashes of mud. A couple of side pulls, so I will try the bolt thing first. Otherwise, I see a re-greaseing job in my future:ack: I forgot to mention that it was never silky smooth and easy, it has gotten tougher to free-spool over time and with increased use.
