325 thousand on a 94 DI. No internal repairs to the engine, only water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat. Was running great the day it got smashed by an errant pick-up.

181K on my 94 D1. No major repairs since I got it at 145K. Original owner took awesome care of it and I am doing the same. Just about to take it on a 3500 mile move to Alaska, the only thing I'm worried about is towing my 914 behind it all those miles. Wish me luck.

2001 D2, 185,000.

-valve job.
-new radiator due to two holes being it it.
-new MAF
-new seals in rear axle three times.
-blown "genuine" bottle jack-when I needed it most.
-recall for ABS
-recall for Emissions
-ABS Sensor, front end
-constantly leaking roof(dealer couldn't resolve problem)
-broken idler pulley(left me stranded)

has left me stranded a total of three times.

My 10,000.00 ford ranger went 10 years with no breakdowns. this will be my first and last land rover

Just bought a 95 Disco with a 5spd on Ebay. It has 175k on it and the seller claims that it runs like a watch. I only bought it for the transmission (converting a RRC to 5spd) but will probably drive the Disco for a little while before it gets parted out.

Is the Disco 5 speed the same as the Defender? Although Defenders had two manual trannys I think, the R380 and whatever the standard one on the 94s was. I heard those weren't as reliable as the automatics, anybody have any thoughts?

yeah, the LT77. has the reverse at top left instead of bottom right. heard same things, that R380 is more reliable. but no first hand knowledge. think all the 5-speed discos came with R380.

3 breakdowns in almost 200,00 mi and you're complaining?

You can keep your Ranger...mine was a transmissionless POS after 40,000 mi. What a turd.

R-380

They did...but my R-380 failed under benign conditions at about 70k miles. Straight, level Interstate cruising with the CC on, ironically passing the LR import facility in Baltimore when the 5th/reverse layshaft fractured. Quickly shiftted to 4th and continued for another 200 miles. Pulled it to bits later and found a shaft cut as cleanly as one could do it with a plasma torch....

One of these days (famous last words), I'll rebuild it - once I figure out which layshaft I need. There are two (or more) and I have no idea which one is appropriate.

I've gotten used to its idiosyncracies, but then driving Land Rovers for 35 years does that. SO says never another Rover, tho'.....

Cheers

I know the ZF is a better unit overall, I just wanted a manual trans because I dont like slushboxes. Im sure the trans will hold up ok to the street duties mine will see. Although it will have a fairly wel built 3.9 powering it.

I was only curious because I still have this fantasy of someday buying another Defender which will probably never happen :( . My '95 that I had gave me no problems, but I wondered if it was better to go with a '97 with the ZF automatic for reliability reasons. I personally prefer 5-speeds though.
