hot damn

After my post the other night about my problem transmission, I basically accepted the fact that I'll have to take a hit. To my surprise, it has been running quite well lately. I put the Lucas fix w/ the amsoil synthetic in mine as well. My problem isn't the fact that the unit wasn't serviced, I have all the receipts. You know, when I drained the unit, only 2 quarts came out. I bet that indy in Nashville wasn't much of a mechanic at all. It makes sense he would do it since I got him to quote a unit before I asked him to service it to see if it shifted smoother. I should sue the bastard. But I bet 4k mi wouldn't do much damage versus 94k. Does it take awhile for the fluid to work itself into the transmission?? Im hoping it'll behave......My last resort is pheonix rebuilt though....anyone have any problems with the units?

I asked this question of a contact I have at ZF and was told that there are a number of reasons. first being when you drain the fluid the pan empties but the torque coverter does not and that causes different friction levels at different clutches at start up. this will cause hard shifting that will over load the friction surfaces and cause failure.

This is the kind of answer that I have found makes discoweb so good! (From another new user. Thanks everybody, I appreciate it.)

This explains a lot. One further question though. If one was to put the trans in ?D? with e break on and let it idle for??say?. 15 - 20 mins shouldn?t this allow the new fluid to mix with the old and even out friction levels throughout the trans with out undue stress?

I will have to go back to the green bible and get my head around it.

You serve as a prime example of the mentality of todays LR owner who goes out and buys 130,000 mile junk. I am sure your Rover will look good beside your double-wide when that trans goes - and it will. :D

My goodness gracious, here we go again. I have to admit that was a well dished out ball busting concerning my lack of paragraphing...kudos to you. However, the double-wide statement is completely and utterly unfounded; double-wide trailers where I live, that'd be the day. Hicks don't hail from the Northeast my friend.

My "rudeness" was only in response to yours. I have yet to attack anyone, including yourself, on a personal level. I don't know you, as I've said before, but remember you don't know me either. I too am an ass but try to aviod acting like one until provoked. I'm not so sure what behavior you feel I displayed that would deserve a trip to the "banned bin".

I don't play the "I'm new" card, I AM NEW. Must I prove myself to YOU before being accepted? Is there a crucible I must pass? Your "don't tread on me", holier than thou stance is getting a little old.

And then you insult my mentality and worse yet...my truck. Let me get this straight...according to you, end of life for a LR is 130,000 miles? Or were you insulting my ability to turn a wrench? If I'm not mistaken, I'd call that a personal attack either way...unnecessary at best.

My wish is that we can stop this mindless banter and focus on the matter at hand: helping eachother out. I hope I can add at least a little something to the board and not continue with this current nonsense. If you do know your stuff about ZF's, how about helping me stretch as much life as possible out of it rather than repeatedly trying to put a hex on me?

marc - thanks for the warm welcome...my trans has been running great since the filter change and I really hope that continues. I fully realize 139k is a lot of a beating in transmission years, I'm only trying to hang on as long as possible. As far as the "old timers" go, I just don't understand why they feel the need to brow beat from go. I try to be diplomatic about things and from what I see so do you and I thank you for that. Why can't everyone do the same?

Jon,

Lets just say that I will give in at this point. I will even go one step further and say that you have earned my respect by actually crawling up under your truck and doing what you think needs to be done. Many will not do this simple step. I did take offense to your first couple of posts, but I admit that I should have probably given you more leeway because you are new.

The comment on a 130K Rover had more to do with the state of your ******. You are gonna need a new one like Marc suggested. These rigs are so simple they can be maintained for many miles, but when it comes to transmissions they seem to have a limited lifecycle. Once these ZF's start to wear out cluch packs there is no going back. You can nurse it along for a while, but eventually they are gonna cause a lack of tolerance that will spin a hard part like a planetary.

MUSKYMAN sent me to a place called Phoenix Hard Parts (http://www.phoenixhardparts.com/). Both Thom & I are using thier stuff and you will need it soon. Save up about $1600 for the whole job including shipping, fluids, etc. and iyou will be much better off than trying to hold together what you have.
