it seems the shift lock won't let me into gear. it is stuck in park. I went to the hobby store and it would not go, so I went under and wiggles and cussed at the brake light switch and it went into gear. so being the einstien I am I stopped for smokes at a gas station and now can not get it out of park, I even took the switched out and nada. no brake lights or anything. Is there a way I can jump some wires to get it in gear?? I need to get my truck out of the hood while it is still there.:banghead: Oh yea, it is a 99 disco 1 auto

after reading it looks like the brake light switch. I pulled them both completely out so they should let it shift. nada.. am I correct in my thought it is the one with the hose and 2 prong connector? can I just jump those 2 progs together?? or apply power to one??? HELP, I can hear my stereo being stolen from here

Looking at my RAVE cd, the switch you described should be it. Jump the prongs to get the shifter to unlock. Good luck.

pull the plastic cover around the shifter straight up and remove the lock all together. I don't even have one because I never wanted to get stuck like you are now. It will probably take a screwdriver to pry the tab out a little in order to pull the solenoid out. Once you get that cover off you will see it plainly. It is a round solenoid that without power supplied via the brake pedal it protrudes and locks the shifter so it won't move. Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Mike

i heard switching the leads on the rear window on the defrost and brake lights works, make sure you turn on the defrost.

OK just went and tried to jump that 2 wire one coming off the long one and nothing.. it looks like a PITA to get to the lock by the shifter, do I have to take the whole council out??? anything else I should be checking?? I have both the switches off the brake pedal, no brake lights, no leaving park... It has been acting weird the last few days. when I hit the brakes by turn signal light comes on and the front running lights would also come on...when I turned the head lights on the turn signal light would stay on and the left side turn lights would stay on.. Now I have NO brake lights at all

The switch WITHOUT the hose is the brake light switch, the switch WITH the hose is for the cruise control and will not help you. Bridging a connection between the two wires will allow you to shift your Disco unless you have a bad fuse also switching the rear defroster wires will work as well but since you have the brake switch out just jump the wires.......BTW dont re engineer the truck by removing the shift interlock. Rover installed it for safety reasons and the life it saves could be yours......

Same thing happened to me. Pump your brakes HARD to the floor MANY MANY MANY times. When it feels like your leg is gonna fall off, keep doing it. At some point you will hear this little "click" that you never noticed.... wallah! There ya go. It happened to me off and on for a couple of weeks and since then, no troubles here. Hope this works for you. Otherwise you will have this grossly misshapen right leg for nothing :) '01 SE7 here

I've only ever owned vehicles with manual transmissions, so maybe I'm missing something here, but life-saving safety shift interlock?
