Heads are off, how bad is this carbon deposit?

Should I leave the piston as it is or should I clean the carbon deposit? I put some engine oil in the surface and wipe it dry while the heads are in the machine shop. It seems like some carbon deposit got in between the piston and the cylinder wall. Would that be a problem?

Also how much do I need to clean the mating surfaces on the block? There are some marks from the old gaskets. Do I need to clean them off too?

Mine looked the same when I did my heads a couple months ago with about the same mileage.
I was going to just leave it.
Sprayed some WD-40 to protect the bores while the heads were being machined.
A couple days later all the carbon was lifting and peeling off the piston face. I just vacuumed it off with my shop vac.

The WD-40 did something to loosen and lift it?

carb cleaner and an entire roll of paper towels. Get the surfaces as spotless as possible.

I wasn't going to clean mine because I didn't want to rinse shit into the rings while trying to clean the tops.
The way the WD-40 broke it loose and than being able to use a vacuum to suck it out was nice.:applause:
I had no idea WD-40 would do this I was just trying to keep the bores from rusting after the coolant and crap run in there when pulling the heads.

If you look at the photos closely, it seems like there are already some carbon debris fell in between the pistons and the cylinder wall... :banghead: Am I doomed?
