Head Gasket

How common is a blown head gasket on a 2000 DII with 82,000miles. I have been reading conflicting opinions, some say very common, some say very rare.

Who do I believe ?

My mechanic says mine is gone, coolant pissing out everywhere at rear of engine. This mechanic has been highly recommended to me by numerous Land Rover owners on the boards.

Any thoughts.

I have never done anything of that nature to my truck, I would not know where to start to be perfectly honest. I had better leave it to the experts.

Just dont leave it to the ones who work for the LR dealership. I had my local mechanic fix my head gasket and saved over 500 dollars. Just look around the LR V8 is not hard to work on.

I have 78k on my 01 and its due for a driver's side head gasket. Right now it appears to just be a trickle leak, antifreeze has gummed up. I due plan on doing it myself though.

If you can read a cookbook and follow the receipe, then get RAVE and read through it several times to get used to the wording. It is pretty simple - patience is required for some frustrating hoses and the engineering of the engine space!

Just did the valve covers and throttle de-icer/upper manifold - took about three hours which translates to $$$ saved versus stealership prices.

Good Luck!

My mechanic is not at a dealership. He is an ex Land Rover lead mechanic who has set up his own indipendent shop. No way I would pay dealership prices.

Just check the other topic down below ''Head gasket seeping oil'' and see what I heard from the mouth of my service manager.

Your mechanic might be an ex Rover tech, but it doesn't mean that he didn't bring the stealership mentality with him. He knows darn well that the stealership will quote you a head gasket job for that leak. So he's just gonna charge you half the price, but still do a bigger job than he probably should.

See Steph, I disagree with your service manager friend. I was working at a Rover dealer when these trucks were new.... I replaced plenty of legit Head gaskets...

That isnt goign to get better as the truck ages.

if it is coming from the back could it be the intake gasket?

Just thought i would throw it out there since it is very common. I believe that is an easier job than the head gaskets.

Timely topic.

I am picking my 2000 Disco with about 77k miles this afternoon.

It has been at an indie shop in PDX for a couple weeks due to it hemorrhaging coolant into the crankcase. I feared the dreaded head gasket, but it turned out to be a lesser gasket.

He replaced the throttle body heater plate (because that was leaking and I had already purchased the part), the intake manifold gasket and the last one which was the failure - I think he may have said either timing belt or water pump gasket. Will know for sure when I pick it up and I may have my terminology all messed up too - it's been out of commission for four weeks now and I seem to have forgotten a lot.

There were several other "honey-dos" that I also had fixed and my bill is around $1300.

Well, Chris, Can't realy argue about someone elses knowledge. All I know that isn't hear-say, is that he's been the service manager there for over 12 years and only saw a few head gasket failures.

Other than that your knowledge on Rovers is better than mine.

yep - common as wet on water. 82K on a 2000 D2 - i did mine at 76K. i could not believe it either. i was under an after market extended warranty from the dealership. it paid for itself 2 weeks after drove it off the lot.
Best.

Well guys, tomorrow I pickup my truck. Apparantly the head gasket had been done previously to me owning it, I bought it with 64,000kms (40,000miles)on the clock. Hopefully it will be driving like it should now. If it is not look for a for sale notice. I have put way too much money into this truck. I put 300,000kms (190,000miles) on a Pontiac Sunbird Turbo, it still had the original clutch and I never had to do anything to it other than general maintenance. Never an oil leak, no crapped out A/C, nothing, zilch, nada !!!

Thanks for the opinions. Whether I listened to them or not they are appreciated.

Hopefully I will fall in love with my truck again.
