My preference is with the Hanibal - FWIW I think they are better made. Besides who wants a rover that looks the same as everyone elses.

scott, what are you going to use this rack for? I am generally a big fan of the SD rack but I recognize that the hannible as some extra utility to it.

I'm not a big fan of roof racks to begin with but, strength, utility, and all of that aside I think that the Hanibal looks terrible. The Saftey Devices that follows the roof lines of the Disco look much better in my opinion. But, that is based on looks alone..

You may want to also think about emailing Kyle at Rover Solutions and talking to him about what you want.. He might be able to get you every thing that you are looking for in a custom job. It's not like those two racks are cheap to begin with and if you can get the best of both worlds so to speak why not pay a little extra on a custom job. If I was going to get a roof rack that's probably the way that I would go.. Or I would just get the Safety Devices.

I have an SD rack on my D1, and it has some good points like quality of build, looks, and function. The downsides are increased wind noise, at least 1.? mpg reduction in gas mileage, and weight (heavy).

From what I can tell of the Hannibal, it beats the SD on weight (lighter aluminum construction), impact on gas mileage (more streamlined design), and function (large flat surface).

Now if $$ were no object what rack would I go with???

The SD in a heartbeat. Because it fits the disco like it was part of it. It enhances both the looks and functionality of the truck. The Hannibal, on the other hand, looks like a roof rack.

SD is the rack to have for your 04.

you look at the pro's and try to find hannibal racks fitted to their vehicles. some sponsored expedition groups will have hannibal racks cuz they were given to them for "free."
look at all the special vehicles, camel trophy, trek, g4... if the hannibal was the shit, special vehicles would have chosen hannibal over SD.

you want to look special or unique... by all means why not get this instead...

ruff rider

it's rated over 500lbs.

good luck

Special Vehicles went with SD because of prior working relationships between Leyland and SD. Not to mention the fact that the CT Rovers already had Safety Devices roll cages. The Trek and G4's use the SD rack to maintain the "look" of the original CT's. Don't forget the CT discovery's do Not have gutter mounts - they mount through the roof to the cage - Huge difference.

So the choice between SD and Hannibal had nothing to do with either one being 'the shit'.

As for the mountaineer rack ........... I'll leave that discussion to people like Kyle.

But please, if you know where anyone is giving a Hannibal away for free - I'll take one.

BTW is it me - or does this CT roof rack really not follow the roof line that well

would of posted camel-discovery.com since that has all the specs etc - but looks as though the sites down at the moment.

Land Rover and Safety Devices worked together to design the CT roof racks. To the best of my knowledge, the bolt through design was engineered around 89, and then used for the 90 CT on the Discoverys. The rack/cage system was designed to be strong enough to do recoveries using the rack.

static load or dynamic?

You're crazy if you're thinking about running 500lbs on the roof rack while wheeling, unless perhaps the rack is welded to a safety cage which most of us don't have, a la Camel Trophy. Even then you've seriously increased the tipping moment of the vehicle.

Check out the payload of the Disco and consider why you need a roof rack. Your answer should be (a) for lightweight but bulky things and/or (b) for sitting or sleeping or watching game animals or playing the fiddle on when you're stopped and/or (c) to support lighting and other accessories which by their nature need to be attached up there. Carrying around significantly massive items up top when they can better be placed low down inside the vehicle on a more sturdy mounting point and closer to the axles is sheer folly.

When I finally get my vehicle sorted out the rack will be only for lighting, possibly a tent, pullpal (bulky), GRP bridging boards, shovel, limb risers, and several soft sided haul bags to contain clothing and other lightweight kit.

Hmm must be for all the parts that fall off his/her Harley....

Personally I like the Hannibal myself, but it is more of a place to sit during ball games watching the kids or photography that I want one.

don't know about you, however, I try and securely attach all my shit to the rack after I put it up there. - static load

nothing worse than having Peli cases jumping up and down - dynamic load - on my rack when I'm driving.

not a dynamic load just because the vehicle is moving although the dynamics of the vehicle do change. :D

there are a few folks on this board that travel heavy on their trips and carry a fair amount of stuff on their racks. a large Peli case just empty isn't that light to start with let alone filled with stuff.

no doubt having heavy items as low as possible is a good thing though.

OK, what's up with Jeff's picture links?

Didn't EVERY Camel Trophy Disco have a Safety Devices roof rack? ;)

Accessory elitism takes another blow.

Next thing you know, Bill Burke will be running IPF lights on his personal rig. Oops, he already does!

This cracks me up.

Please help me Koby, tell us again that only cheap, stupid f*cks don't use SD racks, Genuine ladders and Hellas!

man, i don't think it has anything to do with being a cheap fuck. in this case, it is aesthetics and noone can argue that an SD rack is better looking on a disco than a Hannibal. hell, the hannibal is probably more functional, it might even be stronger. but when i see a hannibal on a truck, i think of that van ho posted and every other contractor/plumber truck running around. when i see an SD, it is just niiiiiiice.
