There are lots of job opportunities if you are an oil & gas guy. Recreational opportunities are endless, although you still need to drive a bit further to get to the San Juans, where the steeper skiing is. Powderhorn is a good local mountain but I would not want to ski there all of the time. That said, they've actually had a decent year, FWIW. No one mentioned the fishing yet...great fishing! The mountain biking is so good many of the locals shun their noses at Moab. Like dirt bikes? I suggest you buy one or two if you move there, too. Camping galore on the Grand Mesa; lots of places to hike and explore. There are also good real estate opportunities as well. Your $$ will go a long way in terms of housing.
The downside to GJ is the lack of good restaurants/nightlife. The place closes down pretty early in general. There is a decent Italian restaurant on the mall downtown. There are some very good regional mexican joints as well. But, lots of fern-bar chain restaurants and honky-tonk bars, if you are into that kind of thing. Downtown is sort of having a revival so perhaps the dining choices will improve in time.
In general, GJ has a decent vibe. The potential for growth is there and the locals keep pretty quiet about it. Just ignore the naysayers; they form their opinion from what they see as they pass through the town on the freeway. Oh yeah, the freeway- don't live near it. Look for something SW of the freeway, closer to the Monument in between GJ and Fruita.
I don't live there, but visit often for work. Good luck!
