Going to a police recruiting event on Sat

Although the Columbus police dept is not hiring, I'm going to check out a recruiting event this Saturday at a church near my house. This architecture thing is just not doing it for me anymore. I say all the time if I had to do the first 31 years of my life over again I would have become a teacher or a cop. I do not have the patience nor the funding to get my master's in teaching. I need some fullfilment in giving back to my local community and keeping my neighbors safe.

Any words of wisdom from any Dweb leo's?

Yes. Research many agencies and pick several that you like. Ask the line officers what they think not the brass. Then apply at several places and don't expect to get hired your fisrts time (although I've seen it happen). Might try being a reserve first to make sure this is really what you want.

Good luck

Thanks Andrew.

I assume by research different agencies you mean County Sheriff's, Municipal Agencies (City, Town,or Village) & Sheriff's Deputies? I think this event is just for Columbus PD. Any specific way to research each agency? And to the reserve, yes I've already sent in my app for reserve!

Thanks!

Yes do some ride alongs talk with people who work there. The web sites will offer canned statements but can be helpful. Talk to agencies that have to work with the one your interested in. You want to make sure you'll be a good fit. Be yourself/professional when talking to these people. You get respect when it comes time for your interview and you can tell the interviewers all the research you've done about their agency. It shows your serious about the career. I recently sat on hiring boards and you could tell who didn't do their homework

Like Andrew said you probably won't get hired the first time so don't give up. It took me two times and I know guys that applied and tested 4 or 5 times before getting hired. I will say that police work is one of the greatest jobs out there and i've done numerous different jobs in my short life. FWIW we are hiring.
