alright, pix didn't come out as well as i would have liked, but you get what you pay for.

1. weather film off, looking at lock actuator bolted on. circled bolts must be removed
2. looking at the end of the door. circles are two screws and one bolt (13mm) that need to be removed.
3. inside of door looking at the latch that you need to remove
4. window frame raised up
5. latch mechanism removed. circle is where spring goes
6. picture of new spring next to old spring

Hate to bump a thread that's over 3yrd old, but by far this is the best thread I've read when dealing with correcting this issue. I've search two other forums and after reading this thread, it sealed the deal for me. Yesterday I took out the LF door latch and it was a pain as stated. Confirmed my spring was broken and ordered a few springs from our UK brother.

Thank you gents

Misson accomplished. 11 days after removing the LR door latch, I was able to install a new spring. My suggestion, don't wait 11 days like myself to install the spring. It was a challenge for my photographic memory. I know it's ideal to verify a broken spring before ordering, like what I did. But if I had the springs on hand the same time I took out the latch, it would have made th installation a lot easier. I did print a copy of the latch/rod mechanism and tape it on the door to help with the installation.

I purchase 5 springs from our UK brother. As stated the srpings do have a specific location. If you only need 1, 2 or 3 springs, let him know which location you need in order to get the right springs.

Looks like I'm going to get to use those pics pretty soon. I can't believe I've made it this long without a lock failure on any of mine.

is his shipping still pretty fast?

I replaced two of this springs a year ago in my1998 Tdi. Rear and driver...
The spring is handed and costs cents. But the work to change it is a lot. Is this a "only Disco" issue, or is it a common trouble in another makes?
Regards

most makes would have been squashed and recycled into something else by the time they reach the mileage of my discos

I took the door apart to see if shortening the linkage fixed the problem (it didn't)

It would only open from both the inside and the outside when the lock was pulled up. Now after driving it around the rod that connects the outside door latch fell off because I didn't put the clip back on, and the inside door handle is working fine. I'm hoping its the spring problem. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

So, I'm guessing thats whats wrong with my rear passenger door lock. It's the only one that doesn't work, lock or unlock? I thaught it was the aculater. A little spring is the problem?

robertf, you`re right with another makes:smilelol:
ek5usmc: this is the diagnostic method, developed by a lot of cases followed, and mine:
1)Door lock button remains open or closed while the rest change from one position to the other, most frequently rear passenger door: lock actuator.

2)Unlocked door don't opens, lock button seems to be in the correct position.
If You can open the door by pulling up lock button from inside the Disco, or forcing the unlock position with the key, from outside: "p..o resortito" (little f...spring)

If You modify rods length in order to correct this situation with less work, may be You will have success... until temperature or position of the vehicle changes....

Haha.. The land rover relationship is indeed a comical one. I've been messing with mine for so long that the actual exterior handle on the drivers door is ripping apart in numerous locations and I will have to replace that now too.

Life was simpler a few weeks back when all you had to do was stand in front of the mirror on the door, as close as you could to panel, and pull the handle gently while whistling dixie and standing on one foot - oddly enough that used to work every time, until the temperature chaged..

I replaced that entire latch mechanism just 2-3 years ago with a new one, the hard way, and its fun now to think its a spring in that latch again. Although after reading this thread and toying with the adjustments again for a few hours its seem quite possibly that it might just be, and of course that's the case for 3 out of 4 doors for me - lovely!!

I replaced the spring in my cargo door. Here is my experience. Get about 10 of the door panel he hardest parts was finding just the right angle to twist the latch back into the door. It is great being able to open the cargo door without the key.

ok- '03 Disco II:

I'm down to only my rear driverside door working properly.

All 5 doors will lock if I hit the button on the key twice (Powerlock?) but thats it.

Only the one functioning door will unlock with the remote. All doors will open and unlock from the inside- first pull unlocks, second pull opens.

I removed and tried to clean/regrease the rear cargo door lock mechanism about a year ago with no luck, and never messed with it past that.

I don't know if I need springs or actuators? What does the peanut galley say?

does anyone know where to obtain these little door latch springs now? i checked EBay and Ebay UK for phillipstuart33 and the search does not turn anything up. I even email Phil as i had his email from 3 years ago. If he is not longer selling them does anyone have a resource?
