On '89's you are supposed to remove the tank. Later models have an access hole in the load space. Some on this board have cut their own access panels.
If you are not doing this as trail repair I don't think it is difficult to remove the tank-it's just 4 bolts. The more time-consuming part is marking, wrapping and disconnecting the several return lines and the fuel line from the pass side. Also, on the driver's side, unplug the pump harness and fuel gauge connections.
