I have never had a vehicle with a viscous center diff emisions tested before. can it be done on a typical 2 wheel drive dyno? will it stress or damage the viscous coupling in the transfer case? i can imagine its a good idea but i seriously doubt any shop would pony up for a 4 wheel dyno just for emisions.
also will the traction control kick in? i dont think it did on my old DII but i bet the TC is set up a little different on the RR

There is warning label to this effect on the interior of the vehicle, in mine it is on the fuse box cover and on the drivers sun visor as well. The four wheel rolling road one.

when i had my 89 tested in lakewood, co a few years back it was one of the scarriest things i have personally seen a car do. I was sitting in the little booth watching this lady start the run and as she started to ramp up the classic it started bucking around, almost hopping up and down, as she tried to stay in the green. Of course it was in the lane right next to the booth and i thought to my self that this is not good this is gonna end up on one of thoes fox programs like "when cars attack". Seeing panic and terror in her eyes she killed the test pulled it off the dyno and sent me on my way with a pass.

Basically. it's good way to destroy your VC (I have one for sale if you do it anyway:D) and possibly destroy the testing center as well if the beast should get loose from its bindings! Most folks in the test centers know you can't test an AWD vehicle on a 2-wheel dyno and yes, they just do a two speed non-loaded gas test and send tou8 on your way.

wow thanks for all the replies guys. here is what i found out. i guess this only applies to salt lake county in utah but what a couple of shops have told me is that they only dyno vehicles that are 1996 or older. basically anything thats OBDII just hooks up to the computer and gets scanned. i havn't stood around and watched my cars get tested in the last couple of years that i have even owned a vehicle that was newer than 96. so it should be no big deal to get my RR tested in the next day or so and new plates soon after.

who in the living hell would put a full time 4wd car on a 2 wheel dynamometer?

Im a state safety and emmissions inspector in northern virginia, here we do a two speed idle test, the computer promps for the vehicle to be tested at 2500 and idle rpms based on vin and brand. (basically, there are a few other steps involved to get to the test).
if 96 or newer it gets an obd test.

Had to go to emissions today for new tags. it went something like this:

*Waited 45min to an hour in line.
*Guy asked me twice if it was full time 4wd
*lady used mirror to check catalytic converters. Looked in wrong place, never asked me about it, but passed me anyway.
*ran idle test no problem
*the two of them spent a good 15 minutes looking around the engine compartment, especially the passenger side.
*Never checked gas cap or unleaded restrictor. Odd, because they failed me on the gas cap test twice before.
* Passed all tests. No tuneup done, no FI cleaner.

depending on where you are but here in va there are some procedures not performed during emmissions on a rover.
even if it happened to be gray market we the inpectors refer you to DEQ whom in turn
exempt the vehicle and give the owner a lettr of such and a free pass.

Just passed the California smog test (no rolling road) chatting to the owner who smogs the Governors Hummers and coincidentaly working on being able to smog diesels as well.
Minor glitch when it failed based on the 4.0, waited about five minutes while the 97 RR was entered into the system as a 4.6 (i swapped out the engine and gearbox several years ago) Strange that it passed last time as a 4.0 with the previous 4.6 (i am on engine number 3) My catalytic converters sound like tin can full of nails every so often and i was prepared to order new ones, looks as if they will last a while longer.
