Ok, so the dog got his first taste of a skunk's hind end this morning. I had the special dog shampoo specially for skunk encounters ready and waiting for when this inevitable moment occurs but he still STINKS!!!!!! Luckily he's a 7lb min pin so it's not hard to scrub him down. So lets hear it, give me all of the home remedies you got, the store bought stuff sucked.

Here's the formula we have used twice on both dogs! Works pretty well but you have to avoid the face because of the peroxide. You can use a douche on the face. You will still have some stink for awhile.
1 qt peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tbls dishsoap

A couple years ago I googled it and the wife and I made something for this dog.

I think our stew included: vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, dish-washing liquid, & baking soda

Tried tomato juice, it doesn't work. Mythbusters did an episode on skunk spray and the best thing they found was baking soda and dishsoap.

February is skunk mating month!

Peroxide and baking soda works for us...used in conjunction with the skunk shampoo. You can also use some listerine after the first wave of smell has passed.

Unfortunately, our 55# border collie (long hair) smelled slightly like skunk for 2-3 weeks last time he got it. He was less than a foot from the beast and got sprayed right in the face! Just when we would think the smell was gone, he would run around playing or get wet and it was back!

GOOD LUCK!

There's a product called Skunk-Out made just for this. I carried it in the Rovers for years in case the dogs had just such an encounter off-roading. Got to at Bass Pro, Cabella's or one of the other outdoor outfitters. But that doesn't help you NOW....

I've used this twice on my dog in 3 yrs, works wonders. Better than the stuff from the store. Avoid the eyes. Around the face I used a damp face cloth. Rinse well. O' wear disposable gloves and add some clorox when you wash you cloths, it will get rid of the smell. You won't get all the smell off the dog, which you'll find out everytime he or she gets damp. But it gets less over time. Buy the lg size peroxide from the warehouse club store you be using alot of it. Last time it happened he got shot in the face and directly in the mouth. He really tore up his lips rubbing his face on the ground (and the wash did sting the open cuts). Took 2 hours of washing and sniffing for the smellest spots before he could come back in the house.
On the lighter side, got called for an investigation of an odor of gas with PD on scene.
Turned out to be, dog sprayed by skunk :smilelol:

The Hydrogen peroxide is acting as a oxidizing reagent for the thiols. Depending on the skunk, the thiol concentration in the spray can vary tremendously. Just keep scrubbing, working the cleanser into the fur and skin. do avoid getting the peroxide around the mouth, just a few mLs in the stomach can make the dog puke real quick. Good luck!

I had a dog hit a few years ago and this recipe produced the best results. However, the dog would get wet, even months later and a faint sulfur smell could still be detected.

This worked as well for me as anything.

I washed the dog 3-4 times with no change till I tried this. It still took a few washes, but it certainly made it so that the dog could be bearable to be around.

When my dog tried to make friends with the family of skunks that took residence under my shed, We washed her 4 times with the skunk shampoo from petsmart, thrn brought her to the groomers to try and get some more of the smell out.

Everytime she got wet for about 6 weeks after, you would still get a whiff of skunk.

The second time our dogs got hit was a few years ago on my wife's Bday. Put the lobsters in the pot & brought the cooler out back to hose out. Dogs followed just to see if there was any for them. As I'm hosing it out, I see some rustling in the flower garden. I had a few drinks in me so I found it odd but did nothing. Saw it again & saw did Trixie. She was in a flash & out even quicker. Then Lucky flew in & out. This is all taking place only about 2 yards from me and then the skunk comes backing out with tail raised in MY direction! I ran so fast & probably screamed like a school girl. It would be horrible to be hit by a skunk.

When the spray is fresh it burns much more than it stinks. Turn the lobster pot off & break out the kit. One was living under our living room addition so we were prepared. This made for a very memorable Bday for my wife.

She was making ice cream at the time and it had hints of skunk when we tried to have it for desert!!!

the dishsoap in the solutions should be standard blue dawn (H.P, Dawn, B.S).

none of the old school remedies work, oatmeal, tomato, etc.

if it is bad and your dog has thick hair the odor can linger for 1-6 months and can reoccur when the dog gets wet.

Our chessie got NAILED. I.e. her fur was bright yellow. She nearly passed out a couple of times when we were cleaning her.
