Not as robust as the door hinges, though.

That's why I copied the Duke boys and welded the rear door shut on my Disco. I now have to use my hi-lift jack to lift the heavy-ass spare wheel onto the carrier, but that's a different story.

This one claims 2-1/2" more which is much better than the RoverParts version. Flipping the existing tire carrier got me a bit more clearance than the RoverParts but still wasn't enough for my 33's. I ended getting a custom fab and they charged me $50. It works great and gives me plenty of spare (pardon the punn) room.

Flipping the carrier should have easily given you enough room for a 33" spare.

I flipped my stock spare carrier and fit a set of 265/75/16 tires with maybe 1/2" of clearance over the stock plastic bumper (2004 D2). I put on a set of 285/75/16s and the tire hits the plastic bumper. The Greg Davis rear bumper I have sitting here on my office floor should take care of that.
