disconnecting ABS - yay or nay?

hey everyone--
so continuing the brake saga..... (from the thread 'HELP: Won't go into gear/brakes issue?')

I brought my 95 Disco into the shop. The owner said basically there are a couple of things.

1- The ABS system is fried. To replace the whole thing: $2500.
2- The sensors are shot. To replace up to six sensors: $~700
3- Option for bypassing this whole mess: Just disconnect the ABS altogether, check to see if the pads need replacement: ~$320.

We didn't discuss the brake switch too much b/c we were really wanting to get to the bottom of the larger ABS issue.

SO, has anyone done this before? It sounds like it should be fine. Any advice? I surely don't have the $$$$ to replace the ABS or those sensors....thanks y'all.

Just unplug your ABS and be done with it if you don't wish to correct it. I unplug mine at the modulator unit in the engine compartment. Your ABS light will remain on. You can always remove the light from the dash.

ABS Fuse

Just pull the ABS fuse in the engine compartment that should do the trick. Also be aware that your wheels will lock in a panic hard brake situation. So maintain your distance!!!!!!! If your going this route, I would suggest taking the bulb out of the console. Its easy and at least the light will stop annoying you!!!!

Wheel-lock WILL happen in wet or slick conditions, like the first rain or snow.

I almost pissed myself when I was towing a 3000 lb trailer (no brakes) when it was raining and I my front wheels hit one of those wide, smooth "stop lines" at an intersection. Pretty sobering when you've got an easy 5000-6000lb vehicle sliding while you're standing on the brake. And I was only doing like 20 mph, tops in 2nd gear.

I just pulled the bulb out of the dash. Just be careful, it's right next to the bright lights indicator bulb. When I did it, I put the dash back together, and realized I had pulled the wrong bulb. Ii's very easy to do.

you can just unplug the abs??? i hate it. I've grown up around vintage landrovers, lotus's and corvettes. I hate it when the abs kicks in. I feel like i've completly lost controll and it's taking longer to stop. isn't the abs part of the whole system though?

unpluging abs.

Thanks for the feedback.
Will the check engine light come on if I take the abs fuse out? If so, what then?
Tks. Craig.

a question

What I'd like to do is put in a switch that would let me toggle the ABS on a off -- and also shut the ETC off. Anybody dones this? Any problems?

D2? Just add a CDL and when you start the truck with CDL you'll have no ABS or ETC (pre 2004's). To get your ABS/ETC back just start without the CDL.

I know. But I have an '03. So until I can swap in a new T case, I'd like to be able to turn off the ETC in certain situations. Which is why I was thinking of a switch.
