Hi!

Yesterday when drivin hone D1 just died on me in trafic lights....like you turner off it on a key! There was no proble starting her again, and hi speed travelling on hiway was no problem either!

When i arrived home cheked "usual ones" fuel filter, fuelpump, ignition...! Everything seems ok!

Now its a non starter...or you can start her with a bit luck..but engine is running on 3-4cyl, and rough "afterburninG" when shutting off! It feels like ignition cables were in wrong firing order..!

I realy cant understand what migt the problem be?

Engine got an full service 300 miles agao! new plugs, coil, filters, rotor, cabler etc!

cheers

try the VSS. they can be pried apart and cleaned if you are careful with it. it is pretty easy to remove once you get the right allen wrench. there are many posts on here relating to the Vehicle speed sensor. your problem is going to take some time to pin down. remove and clean the IACV, the TPS, and you might as well clean the MAF while you are doing all of this. I believe some use the word stepper motor for one of those parts. Do a search here, get a Rave CD, and get the repair manual from somewhere too. You will need alot of information to tackle your beast. good luck

Not sure why a VSS would cause a non-start while not moving. But what do I know? I drive a manual.

If it's "dieseling", I would check timing first. Maybe something wasn't secured properly during the tune-up?

Hi!

Engine is getting big, fat spark all the way out to pluggtips! :) removed "easiest" ones and yhey were a bit damp of gas after start attempts!

Used an fuel presure gauge and it gives nice 2,5 bar of presure when ignition on! Battery is fully charged and engine cranks willingly!

I have cleaned MAF, sensor connection and so on! Engine just SHOULD start! Realy frustrating! Im obiviously missing something but what??? :banghead:

If Im understanding thing right...immobilizer wont let start engine to crant so its ruled out too!

Do automatic gearbox have something that might stop engine to fire?

IACV, MAF and TPS are clean as babys butt! :)

Check the condition of the actual wires in the engine harness that go to the crank sensor. The insulation is known to crack and turn to shit letting the wires short and cause bad crank signal to the ECU. I have a P38 that does the same shit. Some days it just won't start no matter what you do. Then the next day it will start and run fine for a random amount of time.

anyway, just trying to help a newbie. some of you guys take this way too personally. I really don't see why the attitude is at all necessary considering I wasn't even talking to you. If you don't have anything constructive, then lay off. And what does driving a manual have to do with the VSS? my 96 is a manual too. and i have driven it every day for 105000 miles plus back and forth all over the country. AND i have extensive experience with the VSS in mine. I speak of that which I know, please understand this. The VSS could have contributed and it is a very good list of possible culprits that didn't include just throwing parts at a maintenance issue. Again, Lay off. this is why people are afraid to say anything.

Sorry. had to rant at that guy. Anyway, the inertia switch is on the passenger firewall engine compartment side. Black rubber top. hard to notice but it is there on mine. 96 disco SD 5spd manual

is it a NAS d1 ?
if so you don't have a rotor /cap you will have a cps (crank pos sensor ) this tells the ecu what "group" of cyl to fire for spark if defective or not in the best shape you could get the conditions witch you describe , further more also look for ecu corrosion at pins/ terminals its a very common issue not often found ill folks give up

hello!

problem solved...! I did found loose conection for "ignition amplifier". All seemed OK, but wire have corroded badly INSIDE conector and made loose/non existing connection!

New connectors and some soldering cured problem!

thanks all!

Let's stop here for a moment.
- How are you helping a "newbie" by suggesting something obviously wrong? For a person who's never looked at a VSS before, it is a good hour on a wild goose chase (and that on a clean truck!).
- Not sure how come it is news to you, but whenever you type something on a BBS you are talking to a roomful of people.

AfiRover - awesome call.

pm, No I was not talking to a roomful of people. a roomful of people read what i responded to. you just want to believe everyone is here to argue about nothing. like i have said before, if you need to prove how smart you are, or how wrong everyone else is, do it somewhere else. I am sick of the people on this site making issues with people who are NOT here to argue. If you don't like what i write, ignore it and move on. This is not an intervention. 10,000 posts? get a life...
