Had an excellent Saturday working on the DII - doing a lube fluid swap all round.

Engine Oil, Diffs, T-Case, Trans - all Mobil1 Syn products.

Thanks for the suggestion from discoweb about using two pairs of ramps when working on fluid exchange.

As you can see, you get plenty of clearance for using a creeper under the LR, but it's still level for lube level checks etc.

Took the opportunity to install a pair of Manic Nerf Bars (Bargain from EBAY) as well

Mounting hardware fitted right on to the original LR mounting points, and with my custome 'laser guided' mounting support ;) everything fitted perfectly.

They are good looking and solid - great for cleaning the roof of the DII

Couple of points to note from the days activities:

1) The fill plug on the diffs is a 21mm and not 22mm as many have suggested here.

Using 22mm may well work, but will lead to excessive chewing of the plastic plug!

I swapped out both plastic plugs for the brass EE ones ($20 each) - well worth the money.

2) When assempling the cheapo fluid exchange pump for filling the Trans, make sure you use Hylomar on the pipe connections, otherwise they tend to leak air (and fluid) and stop the damn pump from working!

3) The tech section of this site states that the DII trans uses T30 Torx for the drain plug - this was not the case on mine - it uses a 5mm Hex driver (Allen Wrench).

Using the T30 Torx can round out your drain plug - so look first!

4) When refilling the trans, and waiting for the stuff to start trickling out of the filler hole to confirm level - try taking the filler pipe from your pump out of the hole once in a while..... :(

I was filling away, seeing only a slow drip, got to 9 Qts and decided to pull the filler hose 'just in case', only to have 1/2 Qt of new fluid drain out of the over filled trans!

The filler hose had blocked the hole so effectively, I could have pumped in all 10 qts and never have thought it was full!!!

You live and learn!

DII sounds suitably quiet and smooth now, with all new synthetic fluids.

Looks like you had a great time Chris. What a nice way to bond with your Rover. Piece of mind with the synthetic fluid = priceless.

Sweet looking Rover too. Discos look really good in white IMO.

Figured I' d be better having all new lube in the LR, as I have no way of knowing what the dealership used, or when they were last changed.

Unlikely that they would ever have used Mobil1 synthetic throughout, so it's worth the $$$ and time for the peace of mind.

Also got around to replacing the missing stud and nut from my exhaust downpipe/manifold while I was under there. One of the three on the drivers side was completely missing!

5 min job, which the stealership wanted to charge me $100 for, and even then would not guarantee they could do it....
