Last saturday I broke my right rear axle and few other things.
I have a 04 DII with 15K. I did a search and found a lot about DI, but
not on DII. Has anyone else do this and did you upgrade?

Clay,
I broke a left front axle last year and had a hard time find finding parts for it. The only available axles were the LR genuine ones. GBR doesn't make one as they are trying to design a HD CV joint to go with it. Last week I broke a right front CV joint and to replace it you need to replace the entire axle as buying the new part comes as 1 piece.

My recommendations are to buy new HD axles from Great Basin Rovers and keep the left over good parts as spares.

The main problem with the D2 is that they are too new so there aren't many parts available for them. They are also a bit more complex in the front than the D1.

As for how you broke it...many factors play into that including tire size, obstacle you were attempting, driving style, and wear and tear on the axle. Many people break axles in their driveways...the torque stress from wheeling finally broke the axle when they placed torque on it in the driveway.

As for me, i have 33" BFG MTRs with all stock axles. Works well for me except in the front.

Clay,
What about coverage under warranty?
An 04 with 15K mi should be covered for that sort of thing, right?
Warranty may be the way to go if you just want to fix it but a different storry if you want to upgrade.

If you have a good relationship with a dealership (ie know the mechanics/service writers) you may be able to upgrade, but have the dealership do the labor. I did this with my front driveshaft when it went bad. In fact, my warranty covered the cost of a GBR driveshaft AND the labor. I agreed to pay the difference between the two driveshafts (which turned out to be nothing). Of course, it all depends on the dealership; judging from some stories I hear around here it is a hit or miss thing.

BTW: For anyone in the area, Monterey LR is a kick ass dealership. They support offroading in a way that LR rarely does these days. An indie shop is still the way to go most times, but when you need a dealership, this is a good one.
