My differential bearing is completly shot. This is the bearing found right behind the pinion seal (outter?) Anyways, i have been to every auto part store in town and nobody seens to know what fits. Has enybody had to replace theirs? If so, is there a generic part number for the bearing? The race looks in really good shape so i would only need the cone bearing.
I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Gabe

Fist off, If the bearing is shot then the race is also bad. No matter what it looks like. If you have the bearing out already then look closely at the inner race for a small part # stamped on it. Once you identify the manufacturer and # you should be able to find a replacement.

Thats what they did at autozone and advance and they came up with one that is 1/4" bigger in diameter  . I found one on brithish pacific, im just waiting for it to get here. Thank you for the reply, I appreciate your help and concern.

You might be better off just getting a new diff. To get that race our you will likely need to fully disassemble the diff, drive the race out and then reassemble. You are going to need to reset the backlash too. Not a big deal if you have the tools and knowledge but a used diff isnt worth squat so that might be a better option. If you gotta change the big pinion bearing, its even more of a hassle as you need to set the pinion depth and the backlash. Luckily the large bearing is robust so its probably okay. Gordo

The big bearing was fine. And the dif did have to come apart. The end pieces that screw in or out (i dont know the name) Had to be re adjusted. I drove the truck around town yesterday, There was a slight rubbing sound, but not sure if its the brakes. The other thing was, when i was installing the casttle nut. if i make it too tight, i coudnt turn the dif by hand, so i had to back it up 1/8 of a turn. Is this normal? when the dif is installed and the rear end lifted, should i be able to spin the wheels by hand? (i can spin both wheel easily, lock one and spin the other)

Well sounds like your pinion preload is incorrect. Its been awhile since I put the gears in my truck but that nut needs to be TIGHT. Sounds like you need to add a shim behind the bearing itself. Here are some directions I pulled off Kams site to help you. I got my preload shims from Bill at GBR. I used an inch pounds torque wrench to set the preload correctly. Get several thicknesses as you need to get this correct.
Also, when you set the backlash did you drive the one adjusting nut all the way in(the one closest to the ring gear) until there was NO backlash, and then slowly crank the other adjuster in until backlash was within range? That sets the preload on the diff bearings. Good luck. Gordo
