So I'm about 45-50mi, and 2 days, into driving around with the Lucas + MMO (in engine and gas) and the sound is gone. It's still a little soon for me to call it problem solved, but I'm feeling a lot better. I'm going to start saving up money specifically for big repairs and solve a couple smaller things right away.

My truck is an 03 is the failing motor vin range so I'm always expecting the worst. I can't believe I didn't notice that thread until a week after I bought the thing!

Dave use the MMO every 3 oil changes half of the small bottle and it will help keep the engine clean. I run it through the gas maybe twice a year. Glad your noise seems to be going. When I had my issue I had lucas in it...but wasn't till I added the MMO did the noise go away.

Chris - I have to give you props for your conversion to the Syn side of the house!

I never thought I'd see the day you recommend Mobil1 0W40 for a DII! :jump2:

What can I say, untill this last year or so I thought API ratings were all there was. I went to a fluid class and found how wrong I was. Actually, I was pissed off because I had used the wrong oil on my of my personal/friends and customers cars because I was lied to by the oil producers. Either just flat lied to, or lied to by omission. So, I went to more classes, made cyber friends with a couple of Oil Enginners, and read everything I could.

Its frustrating to see the wives tales I believed.

OK, I shot a couple quick videos - one with no tick and one with the tick. They are 400 & 144 KB in size....anyone want to host them for me?

I think it is the purge valve....while the tick was going strong you could feel that little black plastic cylinder humping away like a horny rabbit.

Just changed plugs and wires on my 03 and noticed my start up valve tapping sound went away. Just a thought.. mine has 68K on it.

Alright, thanks to adriatic04, here are the videos. Both were shot from the same vantage point; under the driver's side engine, in the garage. I found that there was too much engine noise if I tried to record under the hood and the ticking was drowned out. Sounds similar to adriatic04's and as I said before, you can feel a marked difference between tick & no-tick when you put your fingers on the purge valve.

If it is indeed the purge valve, is it a problem? The service manual says that the possible malfunctions associated with the purge valve are stuck open, stuck closed, or sticky valve and if it creates a problem with the EVAP emmissions control system then the ECM will throw a code and an MIL will illuminate in the instrument cluster. I have no malfunction lights on the dash associated with this.

In terms of a code - at least in my case, mine was bad and no code. Remember, it will need to stick closed or open during specific cycles that the engine is looking for via the ECM.

If it is just starting to go bad my guess is it will be awhile before it throws a code. Its a fairly cheap part to replace - I got 155k out of mine so I figured it was money well spent ($100 or so) and the ticking was gone.

My noise kinda sounds like that.. But, I'm pretty sure mine is a exaust leak. I used a stethascope all over the top of the engine and didn't hear anything.. I coulnd't hear anything on the purge valves, but I did hear the noise on the metal hoses that connect from the block to the purge valve. So I think its an exaust leak.

Oil & filter were changed about 1,000 miles ago....oil level is exactly mid-way between the dots on the dipstick. I might top her up but will probably take less than half a quart.

Here's a little update....

I've been living with the intermittent ticking since I last posted in this thread over a year ago. I've been up & down the exhaust system and found no evidence of leaks. I haven't done anything with the purge valve. I've just been living with the tick and when people mention it or make fun of my poor little ticking truck I just tell the truck that it's OK, you're not any different than anyone else. My tick & me are like two peas in a pod.

I got my oil changed a few hundred miles ago (now I'm at about 71,000 miles) and I decided to swig some Seafoam before the oil change. I dumped a whole bottle in the gas tank (I've done this before) and I also dumped about half a bottle in the oil filler tube (never done this before). I ran the Seafoam in the crankcase for about 3 miles, the distance between my garage and the shop.

A couple days ago I was at the ATM drive-through and there was my friendly ticka-ticka-ticka keeping me company. Then something strange happened...the rhythmic ticking that I've grown to love started faltering, ending with a few pathetic, stuttering ticks and then utter sweet silence...just the harmonic chords of the 4.6 V8 floating on the breeze. The tick hasn't been back. Coincidence?

I had the tick. Ran MMO for about 300 miles right before my oil needed to be changed. Changed the oil, ran another bottle of MMO for about 1000 miles and changed the oil again with Rotella and another thing of MMO...haven't heard the ticking and it got better with each oil change and bottle of MMO.

I fully expect the tick to eventually return but I'm thinking that regular treatments with something like Seafoam or the Marvel Mystery Oil might be the ticket. I'm convinced that my tick is internal in the engine and not related to an exhaust leak.

do you guys hear this tick with a screwdriver on the ear? Mine I am almost 100% certain is the purge valve. If I unplug the purge valve connection the tick is gone.
