Damn brittle hoses!

One of those fuckin brittle hoses cracked while I was driving yesterday and my truck overheated. I pulled right over and shut her down as soon as one could. Replaced it with 5/16 hose and worm clamps. Truck runs like it did before, but I'm worried about long term issues. I have about 145k on her and this is the first time its ever overheated. She still has original HGs (probably on borrowed time as is). Anyway, what experiences have you guys had after a single overheat event?

At least it was a hose and not the junction. Replacing the water pump 2 days ago and the lower junction on the d2 broke...it's sold as a complete unit with the hoses

You did not try to drive it home or to a garage, you should be OK. My D1 while idling in front of a video store in 105 deg heat with A/C on pegged the gauge. Shut down immediately. Let cool and restarted and drove home without problems. Replaced coolant and thermostat and wife drove it for another 5 yrs. without problems.

Thanks for the info guys. That junction piece on mine broke too. I replaced it with the uro parts linked in this thread and replaced the clamps with stainless worm clamps. Holding up well for almost 2 years now. I just ordered a replacement expansion tank because mine has a small leak. I've replaced the Tstat with the lower temp one, water pump, and the above mentions stuff over the last 3 years. Rad and hgs still original. The plast hoses junctions/ tstat were crumbling when I bought the truck at 104k. I have stuck with dexcool since the PO (original owner) never added foreign crap to it. I don't think he changed it out enough. I change it yearly when I'm replacing cooling components lol.

Did the same while tearing down the front end to replace front cover/water pump gasket.

Ive done the throttle body heater bypass on both trucks with parts store 5/16ths and have learned that it too will deteriorate/crack/fail as well. I had one only last about a year and half.

Havent found any high temp 5/16ths locally yet, but its cheap to replace regardless of how long it lasts.

Bill,
I've used the HPS stuff, it's okay but samco is still the best http://www.boostcontroller.com/Superflex-Hose-s/2024.htm

Yes, samco is expensive, but the spring steel guarantees the hose will not kink. Boost controller also has another hose that is very flexible and is very economical, it's in the heater hose section of their site.

Boost controller also has flouro lined silicone for use with oil applications.

Op,

Fuel line is okay, but over time it gets stiff and when you try to tighten the hose clamp up either the clamp will strip or worse you will crack the plastic nipple on the rad or expansion tank.

I used it on mine figured it was better than fuel line. I've also used the heater hose on the MG for a year or two and it's worked well
