What does your D2 idle at? and what temp does it reach while idling?

I just bought at bluetooth OBD2 reader to go with the torque app for android..
This what it reading:
Ambient temp is 71, after letting the truck come up to temp the truck is reving at 650rpm (seems kinda low) and the temp got up to 210.

Is that within range? Last weekend I had a friend lend me his scan gauge after doing a really steep muddy hill climb and it got up to 220... seems like the idle temp should be lower, especially at night when its only 71.

The radiator is only about a year old, not even.. had a coolant flush done then. Im thinking maybe a 180 thermostat mod is in order..

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Mine idles at 665 +/- 10 rpm, SG2 shows my temp at idle being 206F at the highest, normal for me is 198-206 at idle.

I drove it to work today, a mix of highway, country road and some city. The highest temp I saw was 208. And that was at idle, seems to cool down to 197 while driving.

Seems normal then. Im really curious to see the temps while wheeling. This is a screen shot from my phone this morning.

Thats about the same readings I get from my SG2 as well. 197ish at 65mph, highest I have seen was 216 after running it hard, but it came back down in a matter of min.

Mine idles at around 660 - 740 rpm, temp ranges from 195 - 198, has gotten up to 206 sitting on the trail.
A friend of mine has a D2 that gets up to about 212 at the highest.

I guess it was emissions requirements (however little it applies to Rovers) that drove D2's normal running temperatures higher than D1.

I've been curious to what should be considered normal for a D1; here are my observations:
- "done in" Disco: blowing coolant our of every orifice: 235F

- borderline-leaking head gasket, normal thermostat and water pump, half-plugged radiator, half-failing fan clutch: 212-224F

- same but with a good fan clutch: 206F-224F

- same after a head gasket job, radiator rodded out, proper fan clutch: 188F-201F

- Another Disco: good condition, with proper fan clutch, half-plugged radiator: 194F-204F, going up to 224F at steep/fast highway grades in the desert. Changed thermostat to 190F: no difference.

- same truck, with freshly-recored 4-row radiator: 183F-194F, going up to 199F while bombing up Baker Grade on I-15 in May. Fan clutch works like a swiss watch: temp goes up to 196F -> fan engages -> 10 seconds later the temp. is down to 188F.

Temperatures indicated by UltraGauge are very close, in general, to the radiator inlet port temperature measured with an IR gun.

I guess D1s had very capable cooling system built in - the operating temperatures start to creep up when half of this capacity is taken out, without overheating. D2 should or could run similarly cool, but not without some modifications.

my 97's been running like crap for a while, creeps up to 225 with the AC on, loses oil pressure, leaks everywhere

threw a fan clutch and functioning condenser fans on it this weekend, it cured everything, possibly even world hunger.

Highest I've seen this week was 195 while stuck behind the worlds slowest train, haven't turned the AC off

Robert - my trail truck will not even reach thermostat opening temperature while idling in my driveway. But - nothing in my experience was worse than bombing up highway grades in SW US in 100F+ temperatures. Maybe bombing up highway grades with another Rover in tow.

Case in point: towed a ~4000-lb trailer from San Diego to Bakersfield with the LWB. 80mph on I-5 to LA, no problem. Traffic jam in LA - no problem. Hit the grade at 80, and 10 minutes later had to pull over and pop the hood.

this was the same as mine for the two years leading up to the HG letting go...slowly. I would replace tstat yearly, with coolant flushes yearly, both of those measures would keep it in that same spectrum.

cold start idle will be 1000 to help with emissions, after that the normal is 650 so you are fine there.

as for cooling, that is normal, although scary and pretty damn hot compared to most cars but the rover can take it. It always made me keep my eyes peeled on the temps though.

New HG and a 180 tstat and my temps are 184-188 at idle and while driving. I have seen it hit 192 but always comes right back to that 184-188 range.

if you arent losing water, replace your tstat with the 180 model and go from there. If you are losing water make sure you keep and eye on it, at those temps it takes seconds to overheat if you have a big water release.

I top off the coolant every 5-6 months..so I dont thnk Im losing that much if any.. I definitely will be going with a 180 tstat in near future.

have read right around 240.

mine started the top off every 5 or so months, that turns to 3, then turns to 2, then it is about every 2 weeks at that point I was ready to throw the towel in as opposed to having it blow a hose on the highway and have the engine go from 210 to 240 in about 15 seconds.

technically it shouldnt need any topping off, its a closed system.

The last time I put any coolant in was October.. I just checked the level and its right where it should be..

Ive overheated this truck once a long time ago.. I ended up replacing the motor.. since that happened its had two HG jobs. The radiator is less than a year old.
AB has a direct replacement 180 Tstat that I will be installing.
