D1 heated seats, broken wire or heating unit ?

I have a 98 D1 with heated power (leather) seats. The heated option is wonderful in winter... however, very suddenly I have a problem on the driver side.

I have not taken the seat base apart, so I do not know the actual layout within... I am wondering if the actual heating unit, or simply a wire, is broken/breaking. On the seat base, on the outer bolster, about halfway along (front-to-back), a "hot-spot" has appeared, and the leather looks shrunken, and is hardened, in an area about 1" around. Something very hot has happened underneath! I could smell something strange at that time, and turned off the seat heating switch. Not using that again!!!

Can someone tell me what exactly would be there? Would it be a wire leading to the heating element that has fractured? If so, that could be easy to fix! I am hoping for that over the need to replace the whole heating "pad". This is the OUTSIDE bolster of the seat base, so this is where the driver is always getting in and out. I am sure that part of the seat base gets the most abuse and flexing...

Looking for help and pointers so I can repair this before next winter (the coldest part of this one is virtually done)!

Sounds like you are very close to a fire in the seat. Stop using the heater right away.
Got to a trim shop and get them to take the seat apart, replace the elements, foam and if need be the leather cover.

Chris,

Yes, rather obvious that something was burning. I had figured that out (see first message about "Not using that again!"...

Other than the "LR Service Manager-like" suggestion, I'd like to hear some DWEB suggestions. This has no doubt happened to others here...
