Cooper verses genuine oil filter

Do people have any opinions about Cooper verses genuine oil filters. I called around, and a local shop is selling Cooper filters. I've always run with the genuine ones but its a hassle to go to the dealership. According to the shop, they said that the cooper filters have the drain back valve as well - which I'm thinking is the major factor with using the genuine ones.

Anyone have any opinions?

I run the cooper oil filter (4 years) and have also been told it has the anti drain or siphon thing.

Fill the filter with oil before placing it on the vehicle. Never had a problem with them-- its an oil filter, what could go wrong?

That's what a dude I wheel with said when he put a Hastings filter on his DI. He got 5 of them for $5 each from the a local import parts place. 1500 mi later....big boom. He should have stopped after he heard a tap but he didn't.

I'm not familiar with Cooper oil filters. And I do use some aftermarket parts. But one thing I always use is a Genuine oil filter.
For $9.50, why not?

I know some on this board use Fram and others with no problems. But I'll stick with Genuine.

The shop is british pacific (www.britishpacific.com) and on their daily special, they're selling Cooper filters which they say are OEM in britian. I've seen other Cooper products for imports.

Just curious to know if anyone has had any problems with them, or any concerns. I'm looking for equal quality and convenience from going to the dealership.

Cooper should be okay - may be the actual manufacturer (it's not like Land Rover actually makes their own filters, eh?). Purolator also makes a good filter, same size as stock. I'd use a Wix, too. Won't use Fram, tho...... FWIW......

Ha. I knew someone would take the bait.

As I said I have been using Cooper for quite some time, like 4 years and I have put one hell of a lot more than 1500 miles on the rig. Before that I occasionally used them.

I believe that I have about 35-40k miles using them and no boom. The BP deal is pretty good, I think that they are typically about $7, I saw the deal too, but have 3 still. I buy them with larger purchases to even out the shipping.

I started using them when I started doing my own work. I have been purchasing occasionally from BP for about 9 years and pretty much trust them. When they suggested the cooper filter, they explained the difference with genuine (which I understood to be non-vehicle threatening with the drain or shiphon thingy required for the D1). I talked to a few other people about what is special in the D1 filter, and I agree that it is the anti drain back unit thingy that is unique.

That daily special is over, BTW, I saw it too.

Atlantic British also says that they are as good as genuine, so that it 2 reputable places carrying them.

LOL.

Like I said, I am not familiar with Cooper. But have witnessed bad things with another filter brand. Just my experience. It's your truck. Do what you want. I'm staying Genuine.

I really should learn more about filters since my wife's great grandfather invented the first Purolator. I honestly didn't think there was a difference. What do I look for when looking at oil filters?

I just saw an interesting thing in an engine mag. It is a strong curved magnet to put on your oil filter. It holds small metal particals that would go through the filter. They showed an oil filter cut apart and the small particles on the inside side wall. This was actually a product review and not an advertisement. I'll post more info if anyone is interested.

Hi,

I was wondering the same thing which oil filter is better. I for some
reason can't find the specs for the pressure relief valve for the
coopers or the oem filter. The reason I was looking for it is that if
you cross reference the OEM filter, or even look up filters based on
the year and model, you get different answers from different
manufacturers.

Example -

Wix says 51068 is correct
Purolator says L25195 is correct.

Go to Purolator web site and cross reference the Wix to a
corresponding purolator part and you get L20081. So which is the
correct filter? Same thing happens for the Baldwinfilters website.
Besides being a different size, all the filters also have different
relief value pressures.

Anywhoo I was going to buy a case of baldwins, but ended up buying a
case of mixed Coopers and OEM ERR430 or something like that. As far
as I can tell, the two filters are idenitcal. If anybody wants me to
post pictures, I can do that (if you are even allowed to as I am new
here and don't know much about this board  )

Thanks ;)
