Planning to tackle plugs/wires in the near future. I've read previous posts till my head hurts. My question is if I'm back there and involved to that point anyway, how do I know if I should change my coil packs or not??
2004 G4 with 43k miles, truck sat awhile, slight rough idle, so i figured plugs and wires can't hurt. Just curious about the coil packs.

Do plugs and wires first. Keep it simple: Champions or NGK's for plugs and go with Kingsborne (my preference) or Magnecors (bout $100/set). Try that first, gap them correctly. If you still have issues, then you'll need to look at the coil packs. At 43k I wouldn't think you'd need to replace, but I don't know your trucks history.

yes it does, if it was done...coil packs rarely go bad, do yourself a favor and make sure there's an issue before you start randomly changing thinks out...

No codes just a rough idle. Used Seafoam about a week ago. Seemed like it helped for about a day. Maybe? Its idled rough since i got it last Aug.

The only problem you mentioned so far was that you were back there and wondering if the packs were bad. Basically, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Not sure what other symptoms you are having.
The problem, and its more of a nuisance at that, is the rough idle. Thought plugs and wires couldn't hurt. My question is because with my luck, I'd do the plugs and wires and 2 weeks later the coil pack would shit the bed.
So the symtoms are really just rough idle. I couldn't tell you if there is any lose of power since its down that since it was new to me. No hesitation off the line, I think it runs smooth on the highway, but again, I only know the way its run since i got it. I have nothing to compare it to.

Honestly, here's my take. Get it scanned with someone with a T4 to make sure and pinpoint the issue. For me, rough idle was diagnosed after doing the following:
Replaced sparks and wires
Replaced Mass Air Flow sensor
Replaced Oxygen Sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1) Drivers side Pre-Cat

ReplacING Other 3 O2 sensors for the hell of it.

I didn't do a T4, but I had a good idea what it was. I knew it was the O2 sensor , but my truck was already at 65k and needed plugs and wires done anways. I replaced the Upper Plenum Gasket out and did the valve cover gaskets as part of the 60k service on my own. Definitely worth it.

run 2-3 tanks of Chevron 92 octane (or whatever you can get) and see if that helps. my D2 had a tough time starting and a rough idle. i was close to doing the coilpacks and tried changing my brand of gasoline from the cheap supermarket stuff to the Chevron. Problem solved. YMMV, GL.
