o.k. so what if i go and buy myself a piece of crap for 500 bux and then go trade it in? are no questions asked? is it that easy? i'm in the market for a new car. so i was thinking, sell my current ride to carmax or private party, then buy a beater to trade. some dealers are giving up to 9 grand for them. am i missing something.... or is this a good plan? the way i see it, if i break even on my sale, then "flip" a clunker, then im up 8500 dollars. enlighten me please.

Hahaha, if thats the case, it would be just like some Weapons Buy Back programs overseas. Motherfuckers be brining parts of a weapon and getting mad cash money for it. Hmmm.

i'm not sure if that is how the program works, but knowing how half-assed and stupid this administration has put this "stimulus" plan together it probably could work.

just make sure it is a vehicle on the list of possible clunkers. not all vehicles are eligible.

you have to have owned the vehicle for at least a year. And the program expires in November of when $1B is spent, whichever comes first.

Yes on the year, plus I heard on the local news about other restrictions; ie: the car you are turning in has to get 18 MPG or worse and that you have to buy something that gets at least two MPG better than what you are turning in.

Well, there are more problems with this program than it's ever going to be worth.

Program started July 1st, yet the gov't guidelines didn't arrive to dealers until July 27th.

The biggest problem/loophole is the gov't can hand out $3500 vouchers to the dealers all day long. The dealer takes your "clunker", applies the credit to a new car, you're done right? Not so fast, an gov't auditor may still deem that at some later date the 'clunker" didn't qualify. Now the new car buyer is required to pay back the $3500.

Well, if this happens you could still get your old "clunker" back right? No, the guidelines outline a destruction process for the "clunker" rendering your old car useless. Great program.

As a matter of fact, Dave Sinclair Ford in STL, is no longer participating in the program. They are terrified that the average joe is getting taken for a real ride. It was on the news tonite. The GM of Sinclair Ford said, they'd rather wait until they get some solid guidelines to ensure that the clunker qualifies, and won't be rejected later.
He said, they would rather miss out on the sales, that have a angry mob of buyers who got the gov't shaft.

they will be lucky if OUR money lasts til labor day.
If the press/media view this program favorably, Congress will approve more money when it runs out.

Will this the program, having spent $1 Billion, really have any positive and long lasting effect on the environment? I dont think so. Giant waste of money.

seems like a trick to sell a few cars. obama needs to go back to organizing his community. let the car business work itself out. things take time. but tricking people to buy new cars is f'd up.

Wait, you mean there's no such thing as a free lunch? You mean that this sounds too good to be true? I don't believe it.

Fortunately, it's done in. Unfortunately, they'll try it again.
If they didn't close it up, it would've made the financially-dumb american public about $5B deeper in debt. And then Obama would've bailed them out once again...

I guess I was too happy to see it go... Ain't completely dead yet.

quote from NY Times:
"Senators Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, and Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, said in a joint statement that “we will insist that any extension of the program requires that the minimum fuel economy improvement for newly purchased vehicles be at least two miles per gallon higher than it is under the enacted Clunkers program.” For cars, the current minimum improvement is five miles a gallon. And, they said, to help low-income car owners take part, they would include vouchers for fuel-efficient used vehicles.

...

Others were outright opposed; Representative Jeb Hensarling, a Texas Republican who sits on the House Budget Committee, called the program “another example of the government picking winners and losers.” The program, he said, “enshrines us as a bailout nation.” "
Perfect...
