Clicking on an 89 Range Rover

I have a pronounced clicking noise that seems to be coming from a drivetrain component on my Rover. At first the clicking was not consistant, and was quite variable, and it would only make the noise when making very slow sharp left hand turns. Out of speculation I did purchase a new CV joint, and I took it to a reputable Rover shop for them to check it out. When they were test drivining it, one guys heard it, but when the other mechanic drove, it made no noise. They figured by the way it sounded that it was not a CV Joint, and instructed me to drive it more and see if it got worse. Here recently it has started clicking when turning slowly in either direction. I then spoke to a very competent Rover mechanic, and he instructed me to look at the front Drive Shaft. So I did. I replace the U joints around 2 years ago and I am running OME MD springs in the front. When shaking the DS around, I could tell there was a slight bit of up and down movement from the flange that the DS bolts too on the Transfer Case end. But just to make sure, I pulled the DS and had it checked out by a DS shop, who today, said it was fine. After I pulled the DS I drove around a parking lot several times and made sharp turns both ways and never once heard a clicking noise. Another thing to note, it would only make the noise when on Asphalt, if I was on gravel it would not do it. Also, just to clarify, it doesn't seem to be the churping noise assosiated with a locked up VCU, it is more of a metalic thud that gets faster as my speed increases. At the moment I am thinking it might be the front output shaft bearings in the Borg Warner Transfer Case. Any ideas as to what I might look at, and what I should do?

Thanks so much!

Paul,

Pardon my ignorance, but if you can explain a little more. Do I need to pull the whole hub off or what?

Thanks!

I second Paul.

Or if they grenade, the varius bits can lodge between the ball and the swivel there by locking the steering. FYI:Very dangerous.
For a few bucks in gaskets and an hour of your time, it's worth it.

OK, here goes...

Pull the front wheels, pop off the little pastic cap that is on the center of the hub. Remove the snap-ring and try to pull/push the splined piece of metal that the snap-ring just came out of. If it move appreciably, or you can hear stuff falling around inside, it's the CV joint.

For the cost of a tube of RTV and some 90 wt. I'd pull it apart to find what's going on.

And get a workshop manual.
It will pay for it's self over and over.
RN, AB, NEPB, all the usual suspects sell them.

It is an '89, so I have the ten spline axles. And I do have th owners manual. I have thought about totally tearing it down, but I would hate to do that and that not be the problem. The shop manual makes it look like an ordeal to get to the CV joint. I know the newer 24 splines have a cover, and a clip that goes around the axle, but the ten splines bolt in. Any ideas? Sorry to be so slow!

Thanks,
Will

Finally someone with the same problem. I too have an 89 RRC and it makes a clicking noise when I drive it. Mine is much the same in that when I drive on asphalt taking a right hand corner something clicks very loudly. The speed of the clicking goes up as my speed increases. It also does it when the Rover leans to the left. For instance when driving from Las Vegas to Pahrump if you are in the left lane the vehicle leans towards the driver side and then I get that noise until I get back into the right lane and get the vehicle sitting even. I have traced the noise to someplace behind the dash (at least that is where it sounds like its coming from). If you find something wrong in the CV's please let me know, I have actually pulled my Rover off the road to do some major resto/rebuild work and if the CV's need replacing that might take cary of the noise. I will continue to look and if I find anything I'll let you know. Until then good luck.
