Check Engine Light

I have a 98 Disco LE and it is my main mode of transportation to and from school. I drive about 220 miles from my home to school. I was driving back from school and I noticed when I got there that the check engine light came on. Now since in PA there are only 4 Land Rover Dealerships none of which are even close to me this was not a priority to have checked out. So I continued to drive it around town without problem for about 2 months. Recently this weekend I went home and as I arrived I noticed the light had turned off. However, I return to school and the light has come back on. Can someone tell me what could be possibly going on here?

the check engine light comes on when the ecu detects a problem. if after a certain amount of start stop cycles....the ecu does not see the problem the ce light will extinguish. if the problem comes back...it will obviously come back on.

impossible to tell you without knowing what the codes are! take it to autozone and have them hook it to an obd2 reader....they will do this for free and tell you what the codes are then u can bring em here. even better, go buy yourself an obd2 reader....owning a disco means you will need one....often!

99% true.

The memory clears in 50 warm up cycles...

If the malfunction isn't happening, the light does out, but the computer will remember what the fault was..... Unless it doesnt occur again in 50 warm up cycles.

Go somewhere to get the OBD-II codes read, as suggested. One common reason for the code is an Oxygen Sensor slowly dying. The CEL can light up and clear automatically, however as you have seen, it usually comes on again pretty soon!
