Changing Out Brake lines

How much fluid will come out as I am doing this?

Should I bleed as I go or do it all the end?

I will be replacing the front calipers as I go.

Is there a trick for the small lines that have to be replaced on the driver's side front?

Decent video here.

I have been using Valvoline synthetic DOT 4 and plan on swapping that out with Castrol DOT 4. I didn't have any problems for many years but wondering if the synthetic has contributed to my sticking caliper. I don't have testbook and plan on using the pump, pump, pump hold pedal open bleeder method with my son at the controls.

Just trying to fill in the gaps here before i head down this path.

Thanks.

I always make a mess when I do it. Wait til the end to bleed, and start the the caliper farthest from the master cylinder, then work closer. I never did get around to swapping those two short front lines on mine, they're next to impossible to get to.

When you mention testbook: Are you taking the lines off the modulator for some reason? I've bled a cpl modulators manually like you're describing, but it's only necessary if you're pulling the lines off of it. Not necessary for just swapping brake hoses at the corners.

if you're just replacing hard lines from flex to caliper, just clamp the lines for each one you're doing if you're concerned with losing fluid. If lines are being opened (caliper replace, line fitting loosened) you'll need to bleed anyway so whats the concern?

It doesnt come pouring out, if thats what you're asking. but have a catch tub handy.

Thanks.

Not taking lines off the modulator.

Video says to drill out the rivets holding the clip for those smaller lines. Looks like a pain to do those.

I wasn't worried about a mess but just didn't want to lose prime in the master brake cyn as i heard that is not good. I guess if i add to the reservoir as i go along it should be ok.

Yeah, as long as you don't let the reservoir run dry, you'll be fine.
