I'd like to see what the estimate has on it. I've used them for my kids Volvos a couple of times for things I didn't want to mess with, I had no complaint about the prices.

And you couldn't do a brake job on one of the most simple trucks out there?

Probably a good thing you traded the Rover. :applause:
The problem that he wasted a perfectly good Rover.

So much for an automotive expert.
"Self-proclaimed modder" is the word.

DavidV.....

you are a DONKEY!

Expert? Please. Your ECU mods were resets consisting of disconnecting the battery for different durations of time.

Track driving expert....Which track, er I mean which platform,...Playstation, Xbox, Wii?

And you know this from....?

Try this on for size. If I am going to spend my time on a car, or pay someone else a small fortune, that car is not going to be a 170k mile Land Rover. Sorry. Maybe I'd put in a new set of Ohlins on the MR2, but it sure as hell isn't going to be me wrenching on the Land Rover pulling wheel bearings or paying someone else $3k to do it.

They have treated me fairly in the past, so I had/have no reason to think they were padding the bill this time (certainly nowhere near as bad as some folks are claiming here).

I was told the Disco would be in all day. Lucky for all the Monday morning quarterbacks, I kept my notes from the conversation:

Front pads & rotors (P&L): $861.96 (we actually paid this to get the car safe enough to drive until we decided whether to keep it or not).
Rear pads & rotors (P&L): $909.80 (elected to stop work before this was done)
Fuel Pump (P&L): 904.63 (elected to stop work before this was done)

$2799.08

Add in an oil change and tax, and whammo, $3k service.

Well, all I can say is these guys saw you as a donkey as well, and hedged their bets that they could get $3K out of you. These quotes are outrageous. At least twice as high they should be!

I commend you for not letting them do the service, however, the fact that you didn't shop around is quite surprising. One would have thought you would have just put a bit of research into this, I mean as an "expert" would a second opinion have been such a crazy idea. This quote would rival any dealership.

Now this is a fair criticism. Touche.

I'll admit to not taking the appropriate/neccsary steps to ensure that I was an informed consumer. I had established some trust with this place based on at least a few years of reasonable and positive service history with them, but you're 100% right - I should have gotten another opinion rather than taking this quote as gospel, and for that I will accept total responsibility.

It's big of you to admit that. I don't want you to think I'm an ass, but this kind of thing is playing out all over with many brands. But few other brands have such a limited parts supply, in particular the engine.

Consider the amount of money you spend on this new car....that money alone could have kept for truck running for at least a few more years.

At some point you could have posted here and still sold that truck for a few thousand. You would have kept a ton of parts in the mix and one fine running engine.

I'm sorry, but a fuel pump, brakes, and rotors aren't enough of a reason to ditch a Land Rover.

Thanks, but that's not all that was wrong with it. Earlier in the thread I mentioned that we had been rear-ended when our baby was two months old (so, four months ago), so that would have been more money to fix - the Disco looked nowhere near as pristine after the rear ender as it did in the photo I posted (although the paint was just as shiny).

On top of that, the rear main seal was leaking, the oil pan gasket was leaking, the CV boots were cracked (right rear was torn), it was consuming coolant and blowing steam (had been for a while) and it would have needed, at a minimum, front tires (if not rears) before the rainy season.

I agree - I could have kept it on the road, but if Obama wants to give us $4.5k for it and I can spend $5.5k towards a new car... or $3k on the Land Rover now and then some more later, I found myself facing a difficult (and believe it or not, emotional) decision.

Footnote - adding insult to injury, just two months ago my buddy and I did in fact spend an entire day putting in all new ignition components, taking out the driveshaft and having that balanced, changing over to greasable u-joint fittings (half of them were dry), and changing the diff fluid and trans fluid. On top of that, we paid to have the windshield replaced (and it cost me a fortune finding the damn factory gaskets for that) and I recently replaced the LCD self-dimming rear view mirror (which had leaked all over the center dash).

This was not a beat-to-hell-and-back neglected rig that I never personally touched or spent time on - but it would have required more time, attention, and money than I was prepared to give it (or that made any sort of financial sense given its value).

CV boots????

Obama gave you $4.5K for it.....but Obama is going to make you pay far more than that for it.

Edit: Might have been a cracked tie rod end - it has been a little while. But, FWIW, we also Seafoamed it (which I now recommend highly) and ran BG 44k through it as well. We replaced the valve cover gaskets and cleaned the intake manifold and throttle body. We also replaced a couple of leaking/worn vacuum lines and successfully resolved a stumble at idle doing that. The intention was to deal with all the little drivability/reliability issues that we knew about at the time. How we overlooked the brakes in all of this, god only knows, but there was plenty of other crap on it to keep us occupied.

Now you're truly preaching to the choir. Obama giveth, and come income tax time, Obama taketh away.

I may be naive, but even I'm not that naive.
