Agreed!

-->>>"I have X dollars here in my fist, and they are yours if the car is -
-->>>mine."

Yup. But haggling IS necessary to get the point across. In America, you many times just need to make the statement above, upon rejection leave, then come back. Prove to them that they want to sell more than you "need". Problem is many people start with too much money in their fist.

To make it worse, they believe that a loan is money in the fist....this is a mistake, IMO. I will never finance a vehicle.

The first thing for everyone to realize, IMO...

No one ever needs a car. Once I realized that, purchases were so much easier. What I would like is something that will reliably drive me about 300 miles in a shot, after that it's want.

People are so envious of my cheap bastard RRC LWB SE (clean as a whistle). I love it. Ain't no way its a C4C and I am seriously considering pulling the C4C card to get a great deal on another old RRC and Disco. Then store them, drive them for fun and I have a lifetime of vehicles.

Or, so the story goes.:p

Cash in your old LR or RR (DavidV). You're still a sell out and could care less for the brand or your hard earned cash.

If you're going to sell your Disco and it's worth $4500 go for it. If you feel better buying a newer car to be part of Obama's "green machine" then by all means, let me open the door for you. If you think that driving around a car giving off less emissions, better gas mileage, and a newer engine is more sound and makes you feel better, I'm happy for you.

For me? I'm gonna drive my disco until the tires rot off, then I'll replace them.
I'll drive it until the engine decides it doesn't like whatever I put in it and decides to seize, and I'll drop another cleaner block in it, heck would be a great opportunity to get one with a larger cam shaft.
I'll drive my disco around because A: it's almost paid off, B: I believe it is one of the funnest and greatest rigs to drive, and C: because I believe in the phrase "It's cheaper, to keep her".

So, if you decide to sell off the Disco, cool. Have fun. Just don't get all butt hurt when someone decides to flame you for still hanging around discoweb because you've become a discoweb groupie. :)

I'll be sure to burn a few more miles and add to the pollution for ya by gunning my engine to get on the highway this morning :) Mother nature sometimes needs a bitch slap.

I have to say again that, once I saw David's description of his truck, that he made a right choice. It could not be sold. It should not be sold, for it was bound to become a sad saga of some poor bugger who'd buy it for the name, spend ages and fortune to fix it, and still junk it a couple of years later.

I figured that if something expensive takes the dump in the Disco, I'd need another one to make a good one out of two. So I bought it. Very clean, 130kmi, and with a hint of impending valve job in the distant future. Best thing? my friends and neighbors are so used to seeing dark and bright rovers, that they didn't realize it was a different one. I should't have told my wife... "Save a kitten..."

I have done rotors, bearings and pads on 2 of 3 rovers that I have owned. Not done a fuel pump ever, but likely would before I would throw it away and I do not believe that the repair bill would really be $3000 unless you took it to a stealership.

brakes is under $250 for good pads and rotors.

the pump is $95 from napa or autozone.

DavidV is still a chump.

You guys are being ignorant...

I did the clunker program today and got an 09 tacoma regular cab 4x4... Got a sick deal, will save more than 100 bucks on gas a month (half my monthly payment) plus wont have to blow through a gallon of oil a month which adds to cost and makes me feel very guilty.

Not only that, I have a warranty so all the money I woulda spent on my disco I will save. And when it comes time to sell my tacoma... well it will deff be worth more than a rusted out disco...

My truck was worth maybe 1500, I'll strip 1k in parts off it before I bring it in (one rover may die but others will live)

Am I a sell out? I've owned 7 rovers in my short life (probably more than most of you), this is just one more I'm saying goodbye to. If I want another rover, I'll drop another 1k and I'll have one... you cant beat the 4500 bucks if you buy a cheap new car.

You guys dont realize that a disco is just another truck, a pile of metal... you can buy and sell them like anything else... if the numbers work fuck it.

Congratulations on the purchase and for possibly being the exception to the rule (as is DavidV). However, I think most of the frustration here comes from big government market manipulation that will create another "bubble" that will eventually pop while taking the same risks of the subprime mortgage crisis. Decrying that is far from ignorant at this point in time.

Sure, it's fun to take a shot at a "Rover killer," but big government market manipulation is the serious target here. DavidV just happened to be on the wrong forum confessing to the wrong thing at the wrong time, lol.

Agreed... the bubble is about to burst lol, and gm just rehired thousands of workers that will most likely lose there jobs in a few months (who ever was going to buy a car probably bought it already).... I think these bailouts are bullshit, let the corps go out of business especiealy the banks that got us into all this, new enteprise will be created in its place from the ground up, a change in wealth distribution, better than before. This is what out country was built on, but these pussies in washington cant ride out the storm, they are too worried about public opinion and keeping their cushy positions.... This country is melting down in front of my eyes, I'm only 25 and know this is all wrong... but at least I have a shiney new truck.. right? UGH

Anyway keep an eye open in the parts section, have a whole parts truck and some other stuff going of for sale in a week or so...

I'm glad everyone got a new car if they wanted one.
I don't understand why they trade-in have to be destroyed. I guess o others can't stay running by using thier parts. It seem like such a waste to give up to 4500 of tax payers money for what will end up to be 50.00 in scrap and benifit no one.
There was a movie in the 80's called "The Last Chase" when this program came out I had to watch it again. This is the thinking that starts stuff like this.

Way to stick to your beliefs and opinions....if you don't realize it, you just participated in the "bailout bullshit." ;)

Discoweb is pissed at Dave and I don't get it. Seems like a very logical move he made.

I dig the cube too.

The politics behind the cash for clunkers is all fucked up for sure. I believe it should have been much more environmentally strict, like originally intended. But I think it's clear now that selling cars was considered far more important, than the environmental aspect.

Here is some science on the carbon impact of a building a new car vs maintaining an old one if interested. http://www.nicholas.duke.edu/thegreengrok/cashforclunkers

So using their numbers and graph, it would take 6 years to neutralize the CO2 put out to manufacture a new car. That's at 18mpg trade-in, 22mpg new car (C4C minimum according to the gov't web site). For a new light truck getting 19mpg (again, gov't numbers) it would be nearly 20 years. And that's using the average of 6 tons of CO2 per new vehicle built.

Well the first cash for clunkers program is working so well .....

Survey: Car Dealers say Clunkers a Failure as 97% Report Problems, Call for Program to Stop
Car Dealer Review ^ | 8/20/2009 | CDR

  • 97% of dealers who responded, say the government is not reimbursing fast enough
  • 13% of dealers have dropped out the program because the government is not reimbursing fast enough and overall concern payment problems
  • 87% percent of dealers are concerned the money will be exhausted
  • 3% of CARS program deals have been reimbursed
  • 66% of dealers have not received one payment from the government
  • 25% of dealers are experiencing severe cash flow problems that require short-term loans to alleviate
  • 11% of submitted applications have been approved (though dealers still are waiting for the money)
  • 16% of submitted applications have been rejected
  • 55% of dealers are not confident they will get reimbursed for every deal
  • 40% do not want the program to continue, even if changes are made to the CARS program

That we need another one!

That's a pretty excellent graph. It truly shows a lot and has all the facts there to back up their argument. Apparently the graph also shows that a vehicle that gets about 29-30mpg will be almost as good as one getting 50+ because the graph is approaching it's limit on that side. Or do I not understand graphs?

Oh, my science!

A friend of mine with a Toyota dealership is out over $300K with his clunkers and hasn't received a dime yet in reimbursement. He's paying his administrators overtime to do the electronic paperwork at home during nights & weekends. He's not expecting to recoup anywhere near the $300K.

At least it led to an interesting, albeit spirited, discussion. :leaving:
