I have had this leak for a while now. I am still under warranty and the dealer keeps saying it is the oil pan seal. They have changed this seal twice and it is still leaking.

What could cause this leak? Rear main seal?

Thanks.

Maybe its the lighting, but that kinda looks like trany fluid on the drain plug. Do you park nose down hill?

Otherwise, what Kyle said.

Nose is actually up hill. 99% sure it is oil. I remember checking it. The dealer just keeps trying to tell me its the oil pan. I degreased all the crud off the engine. It isn't leaking down from anywhere. It is just Right there..

I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow to speak with a mechanic instead of the service guy.

Thanks for the input, I just wanted to double check if it could be the main seal.

pull the hole cover off and look, you will be able to see the seal leaking.

he's under warranty he needs to go be a squeeky wheel until he gets it fixed.

if he starts taking it apart the dealer may give him a hard time.

I figured it was probably just the lighting, but it never hurts to throw a random thought out. :D

I wonder if the dealer techs are just sticking a gasket in and not using RTV like RAVE calls for? Anything is possible. They once told me the rubber inspection plugs in teh sump/bell housing weren't important....

Ha, the dealer forgot to put in my access plugs when they changed the oil pan gasket. That is also why I am going back. To get my plugs.

What are the cliff notes from your other post related to oil leaks and how the dealer was blaming it on the synthetic oil. What was changed or replaced since then? Has anything helped the oil leak?

The dealer was trying to be a wise guy and say the detergents in the synthetic oil were "eating" the seals causing the oil to leak. I did a lot of researching since then and explained to them how that is a Myth.

Since then, they "told" me they replaced "Every" seal in the engine. Which I do not believe they did. However I do have the paperwork of what seals they did replace. It was a few. It was under warranty..

Did they pull the entire engine out?
Nope. I think they know it is the rear main seal but don't want to do the work.. not really sure. They get paid either way. Depending on what they changed a couple months ago. They may have changed the oil pan gasket three times. Definitely twice.

"Every" seal is such a broad statement. What seals does your paperwork indicates was changed. Since you have no evidence that "every" seal was replaced, you're pretty much stuck with fixing this on your own without any warranty coverage. It's your word against theirs that "every" seal was replaced. Have you spoken directly to your warranty company and explained the situation?

What exactly about the oil pan is the dealer saying is causing the problem, becasue they may be onto something. If every seal was replaced and done correctly, it's possible you might have a metal porosity problem where oil is being soaked through the pan. I remember reading in one of my car magazine how the editor of the magazine had a oil leak problem he couldn't solve back when he was turning wrench for a living in a dealership. Just like you, he replaced "every" seal but it still leaked. He eventually changed the oil pan (I think it was a cast pan like yours) and that resolved the problem. Have I ever personally came across a metal porosity problem like this, no. It is possible, I guess so.

If this is the situation with your pan, why did it start to leak after switching to synthetic, I don't know. How many miles did you drive before you notice the oil leak after switching to synthetic? Have you switched back to dyno oil to see what happens?

You might try testing your crankcase for pressure/vacume. With the engine at idle, remove the oil cap, slide a peace of paper over the fill tube. The paper should suck down onto the tube and slightly dish in the center. If the paper dances across the tube, chances are you have a plugged oil seperator. The crankcase is being pressurized when you drive.

The reason the technician probably doesn't want to do it is because the warranty time for that probably sucks depending on your warranty.
