can someone in austin bring me a diff

On the first night of wheeling for the weekend at hidden fallswe blew thereardiff

We drove off the trail with fwd, but you could hear metal parts in the diff banging around. We need to drive to Houston tomorrow, is that safe, or do we need we need to pull the third member.

I am.posting this with my phone, so if any wants to call with tips that would be great.

Doubt anyone is going to be able to get you anything fast enough to salvage your trip and you have to remove the diff anyway so why not go ahead and remove the third and driveshaft and lock the cdl. Cover the hole up and go. Good luck.

Get the diff out and get a piece of pvc pipe to put the axles into so they don't swing around and can spin as a unit. Lick the CDL and be on your way carefully

I'm down in San Antonio but busy until later today. Let me know if you need some help or can't get anything worked out.

Pick-n-Pull in San Antonio has a 99 Range Rover but that's it for parts I think you could get today they are open 8am-6pm sat and sun.

That^ only without putting your tongue on the CDL. Thats kind of gross.

Drop your rear shaft, pull the axles and knock them out of the flanges. Put the flanges back on to keep your diff oil from going out the sides of the axles.

Lock, not lick, your CDL and drive in FWD.

best bet is pop the diff, PVC tube like said above to keep the shafts from flying if they do (probably wont but hey it cant hurt) and roll it. the bearings are sealed so no need for oil in the housing.

or just drive it and hope it makes it in true land rover fashion.

and welcome to the diff breaking club.

so...it will work to get you home...

I was just saying that you cannot just pull the axles out and put the flanges back on, like you can on a D1. I'm pretty sure you have to put the axles back in if you want to put on the big nut that holds everything together.

So, we went to pull the rear diff and discovered that it was actually the axle shaft that broke.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

We ended up just putting it all back together minus the Axle shaft and drove home on FWD and it seemed just fine.

yeah, you wont last very long without the shaft and nut holding it together.

You'll be just fine with the four bolts that hold the hub in place. And FWIW D2 axles are technically 3/4 floating.

Cheers,

I think he means that the end of the axle helps holds the hub together. Otherwise, you are relying on the pressed fit of the bearing unit to keep the wheel on the truck.

Its very similar to the current jeep wrangers, they call it a unibearing. But the same thing applies, the axle shaft outer "flange" behind the hub and the hub nut screwed onto the half shaft are what hold it all together. Anyway it was a little disappointing to spend so much time prepping the truck for this trip just to have a weak stock half shaft give up on the second trail we took, but we still had fun! Thanks for all the replies! I will post a picture of the broken shaft in a while.
