I say weld it on there, make sure you don't have rust issues prior to welding it on so that's a dumb reason to maintain it as bolt on IMO. Diff guards only cost somewhere in the realm of $60-90 per guard I think, you can find "two for" specials and get them cheaper sometimes. It's not a part that I would feel so terrible about leaving on a truck that is totaled or sold.
