Best way to prime oil pump? 1995 RRC 4.2

I'm putting in a new cam kit and have all the oil lines,sump and front cover off.What is the best way to make sure I have pressure right off the bat.Can you back feed the lines with an oil can and just free spin the motor with the plugs out? Any tricks would be appreciated..Kurt

okay - here's what i do - i actually thin out BEARING GREASE with some gear oil to make a witches brew... i pack with that. then with the ignition wire pulled, i crank till the oil light goes out. sometimes it will need to run to quiet the light, so just do it for a minute or so and then run it....

If the engine has been apart I run the oil pump with a drill for a couple minutes. Otherwise pack the pump with vaseline.

cant do that on a serpentine belt engine. oil pump is crank driven.

Hook up your super-sucker to the oil lines and draw oil through the cooler/filter/pump.

Personally, I've never had a real problem with it. The crank driven pumps all seem to prime well by themselves. If they don't, the cover plate is probably worn badly.

Ok this is what I do evey time I overhaul a rover engine. I put the key in the ignition and start. then I cash my check.
