Psssst.....Karen,

It's me from the old bed thread. I end up buying the Spring Air bed for my new hut. All these months later, we love this bed. Haven't been back to the chiropractor since I got it. :D Recently I stayed at a hotel in Rock Island that featured the sleep by number bed. Hated it. Can't say I tried all 100 settings, but no matter where I set it, It still felt like a waterbed mattress filled with air. Think inflatable camping mattress. Good luck with this major decision. You never realize how important a bed is until it is time to buy a new one. Golden slumbers to you. ;)

With out the extra pillow topper it does kind of feel like a camp mattress...

One thing to think about is that you can go to your doctor and get a note about having a bad back and you may be able to get some mattresses paid for by your health insurance company with a doctors prescription so to speak.. Girl I know just did that with some air bag nasa bed.. Cost her 10%, her healthcare paid the other 90%.. Although she really does have a lot of back pain..

Ed, guess I gave those Mennonites a big pay raise, eh? Must have confused two stories/names. Str0ud, thanks for the tossing in of yet another maker, and back to coil springs again at that, LOL! Maybe it's better, I got to thinking about the implications of SLS bags, and.....Ugh, clear as mud, this whole thing.

They must have the low end ones then because mine is nothing like an inflatable camping mattress. Another thought, we got one for my son as well and his has a single air bag for a full or queen size. His did not have a pillowtop and it did feel more like a camping mattress. We returned it for a two bag system and added a pillowtop. The other day we were talking about rearranging his bedroom and his girlfriend said it was the most comfortable bed she ever slept on (lets not go there though)

Eric,
Mine is one of the models with the pillow top.

Mine has the pillow top too plus and extra mem-foam topper.. It's nice don't get me wrong, I like mine alot but, some times it does feel a little like a camp mattress ( ussually when it on the high settings 90-95 ). I love the bed though.. I sleep better on this bed then I have on any of the other beds I've ever had..

I had a good friend in college who had broken her back and she had one of those air bag beds that you adjust....always worked for her.

My in-laws bought some very expensive coil/foam mattress and it took them a while to get used to the extra warmth of the foam. If you are a hot sleeper, I hear they can be uncomfortable b/c they don't allow much air. It's like having bubble wrap insulated around you when you sleep!

We have a Simmons Beautyrest mattress with the pillow-top and no turn design. It has the coils that are independent so that if one person gets out it won't disturb the other....and it WORKS! We have had it almost 2 years and sleep very well. We decided against the foam top because of price at the time and have no complaints. But it was only an $800 mattress I think (sale). We are not in the luxury mattress league like you guys! :)

We've had the Tempur (lease expensive, firmest model) for a while now. Can't comment on longevity, but it beats a spring mattress hands down. You either like the feel of the foam mattress, or you don't. Some people complain it feels like wet sand, but I like it. FWIW, going up in price to the mid and top levels gets you get as soft as you could probably want. You can also get a mattress topper that's a few inches thick and made of the same foam that further adds cush. We may add one of those eventually. We even got the pillows, and they are wicked expensive - like $150 each. I'd buy it all over again if I had the chance.

Not sure why all of you are looking at mattresses so hard. If it is merely for comfort great, but if you have some type of sleeping problem, the best thing in my book is some killer exercise. The bed may not help.

If I do not get decent exersize I not only cannot get to sleep I cannot stay asleep. One of the nasty (apparently genetic) is that I wake up at 3:59 much of the time, only if I get some good physical activity can I sleep for any significant amount of time. Other people in my family that have this problem do not get good excersize and they cannot lick the problem.

Just some extra info to process...

For 800 - 1000 you can get a great Queen size bed (I personally would spend about 800 max). The Simmons B/rest is a good bed, just if you move DO NOT bend it, as those individual pocketed coils get caught up in each other. I have seen people bend it to get it through a tight space then complain its lumpy....duh!
I have no idea what the foamies or the air bag mats go for.

Then again, I sleep like a log and can sleep anywhere....I have fallen asleep standing up against a wall or bar a few times!!

Now THAT was funny! You sure that wasn't a wall AT a bar?! I think they call that passing out.... :D ;)

PS I have one of the foam pillows...don't think it's the actual Tempur Pedic brand, but it basically saved me after I had a bad car accident. Slept on it every night and my neck is defintely better than it would have been otherwise. It's one of the shaped ones with a low/high side. I can't use it every night because I like to sleep on my side (it's best for back sleepers), but it's definitely worth having!

We have nothing but Select Comfort Beds in our house, even in the guest room. We won't buy or sleep on anything else anymore. And on vacation, we're only staying in Radisson hotels that have the Select Comfort Beds.

Ed, what would you buy (Queen size) for $1K or under? And would we know we were getting the same set from one location to another? After Str0ud said he's happy on a Spring Air (which one, Chuck?), I got lost reading up on those. The Chattam and Wells line looks comfy, along with the comparable sticker shock of the Select Comfort and Tempur Pedics, sheesh. Bri, it's things like this that make me stay up too late and lose sleep! ;)

So that's what actually happened to my last mattress. It did get bent when the mover brought it in (King) and it never slept the same again. $1500 gone... That's why I switched.

And depending on the model you are looking at several thousand for the top of line Select Comfort. I think similar prices for the Tempurpedic (sic?) as well.

Ed, too late here in the East to call now, but if you have any time whenever you fire your computer back up, please PM me with your recommendations. Appreciate any help, but if you can't get to it, I understand.

Hope "beverage time" was all you hoped and that you didn't fall asleep in any place you didn't mean to!

KJ ;)
