BCU 73000012/A belong on a D2?

I always have my eyes out for spare computers for my D2, and I ran across this locally. Anybody know if it is for a D2? I have tried searching here and Google. Nothing shows up here, and Google led to some indication it is for a D2. I think I have also read that the BCU is "married" to the ECU by the VIN code of the truck. Is that true?

Similarly, can anybody confirm or deny if a SLABS ECU for a "99-02" would work on an 04? I read one comment here that the 03-04 is different.

I don't know about the SLABS, but I have swapped BCUs and ECUs from one DII to the other and it was back long before I'd seen as many as I have since.

Supposedly, Range Rover (Motronics) ECUs are not interchangeable with DIIs but I haven't had a chance to confirm or deny this personally.

The 73000012 does not look like a good part number.

You will most definitely need a Rover-specific computer to configure the BCU or ECU. Many of the tools available either won't do it, o won't do it easily. I don't think the Launch will do it. The Rovacom-Lite will, I'd be afraid to try it with the DEC given my experiences with BCUs and te DEC.

You can swap the SLABS but it is a step backwards. The earlier SLABS were more susceptible to sporadic abs faults and the abs function wasn't quite as agressive. They are also not configured for the cdl.
I believe the TC function is also improved, it seems so after upgrading on mine, but I can't find any documentation on SLABS updates from 1999 to 2004.
73000012 doesn't look like a LR part number, most have a 3 letter prefix.
Edit, here is a part number for a 2000 D2 BCU, YWC106350.

FWIW, here's a photo of the unit:

Too bad that part number doesn't work. That's weird.

So, if this *was* the right unit, I'd definitely have to take it somewhere to get it programmed before it was usable? But otherwise you can swap BCU's and ECU's amongst D2's? No marrying at all? That would be good at least.

Walter, thanks, I'll just keep my eyes out for a later unit then.

that is a BCU.

you can program it to the truck, but it has the vin burned into it. you can resync the miles, but it will automatically go to the higher mileage one. so you better hope it has less than the truck.

PT, i beleive you are right about the p38 and d2 ecm's not being swappable because the P38 ECM looks for the correct security code while the D2 just looks for a ready signal.

the slabs is interchangeable, but the newest part number is much better than the older version. the abs is way less intrusive and the traction control is much more responsive IMO. The slabs should be plug and play if you are sourcing a used one. except if it has SLS, then you have to enable it or disable it for whichever you have or don't have.

Only if using the T4. The Rovacom-Lite allows for complete wiping of the BCU and rewriting the VIN and mileage.

This topic is up to debate. I've been told it can be done and I've been told it can't be done. There is an awful lot of discussion between the various ECUs. I just haven't had the time to mess around with them as up until recently, I didn't own a DII. As soon as I get a transmission in mine, I'll hopefully have a guinea pig that I'm not as worried about fawking up:D

The BCU has to agree with the SLABS ECU W/R/T air suspension. Weird things happen when one is configured FOR air suspension and the other is NOT. I had one that ran me around the barn until I figured this out. Battery dying, random warning chimes... I'm glad I didn't have to drive it!:D

Sooo... maybe I should pick up that BCU, but I would have to get it programmed before I could use it? It looks brand new in the box, and it's like $35.

I need to find an independent Land Rover mechanic around here, with a computer system.
