The rear crank seal is leaking pretty bad now (at least I think so -- 2"-3" stain on the driveway every night), so I'd like to replace it. The service manual description of the job starts with "1. Remove engine." Huh-uh.

I have a freshly rebuilt LT230 to install, and since I have to pull the BW, it's not that much more work to drop the tranny. I've done other crank seals with the engine in the car, any reason why the RRC needs to be different?

i was determined to beat the system and do the same job, tranny in car. At that time, all I had was a breaker bar and I couldn't break the bearing cap bolts for the life of me. I was sad. . .

However, I used the right stuff to reseal the sump, with extra lovin in the back and it was bone dry. Then the heads went a week later. And the rear trailing arms buckled. And the planetary gears got crunched and. . .

That job can be done very easily by pulling the tranny and leaving the engine in place, I've done it to my 1990 RRC. Just make sure you replace the "cross seals" on the sides of the rear main bearing cap also, they are most likely your actual leak.

Cool, I was hoping as much. I did order the cross seals too, as I had the same thought -- if I replace just the crank seal, the cross seals would inevitably start leaking even worse.

Now, who taught me to spell -- "eninge"?

there are new "cross" seals rover made they are soft rubber and smaller than what you take out

they are better at sealing than the older harder rubber

and a good trick is make sure everything is bone dry before reassembly
