a whole mess of problems, all related? how to do a DIY smoke test?

so, my poor 2000 D2 is getting pretty sick, and I am trying to figure out if they are all related, or all separate items, and why the symptoms seem to disappear at times. Here is the list of issues:

codes p0130, p0171, p1171

these codes appeared about a hour after replacing the air filter and at highway speeds. Paper filter, and my MAF is about 2 years old. O2 sensors are all original (on 106k!!)

when at a stop, holding the break pedal, the engine shutters a tad (feels like the RPM's a tad too low), and there is indeed a sooting on the tail pipe.

here are some physical "problems" that may or may not be related, and these are what I am stressing about because just trouble shooting them is a huge expense to me...

slight exhaust leak at the muffler, not too bad, but you can hear it. This is new also, seems almost to appear about when the codes popped...

there appears to be a coolant leak. I **think** i see a drip on the front drive shaft after shutting the engine down, and running down the right side of my tranny case. But it must be quite minor because my coolant level barely moves over months at a time, AND when I remove the cap while still hot, it has a LOT of pressure and about 2 inches of coolant "re-appears" in the reservoir. But it **does* drop over time. I suspect that this is a valley gasket if indeed there is a leak from my research on dweb?? I also USED to smell coolant, but that smell is gone, the exhaust is clear, no real water vapor at the pipe...

I *had* frothing and a gross wet yellowish spongy stuff on my oil fill cap. BUT it is gone now, and when it appeared, I was doing very very short drives in very cold weather with a VERY high detergent oil. When I did an oil change, there was no water or anything in the first second of the pour. That spongy crap hasn't appeared since it got warm out, and I did a fresh oil change on first snow melt about a month ago...

I was also loosing oil during the winter, and I suspect this is my fault because I thought it would be smart to switch oil to rotella t, and literally a few days after the oil change, the engine started getting wet with oil. What is weird is that all these leaks no longer exist, they literally dried up.

sooo, my question are:

can a coolant leak at the valley gasket also produce "too lean" codes?

why do the leaks seem to be fixing themselves?

if there isn't any relation to codes and coolant leaks, can I do a cheap DIY smoke test to make sure I don't have a air leak somewhere?

and how do I test all my o2 sensors and MAF sensor? I can't go to the shop or buy a bunch of new stuff aimlessly, I am a bit poor right now ;)

Oh, one other thing, the truck ran like a CHAMP in Moab when the codes were popped, I mean like nothing else, a lot of power. But when returning to high altitude, she seems a little weak now. Not sure if that means anything though...

2000 D2 with 106k
new plugs (autolite double plats)
new air filter - paper
3-4 year old magna cores
5w30 rotella synthetic

Hi, I have a similar problem. Did you figure out what it was? My RPMs are about 500rpm when I am at a stop with my foot on the brake. No warning lights on at all. I have changed my oil, plugs and air filter.

Are these trucks at all adjustable?
