99 Discovery questions

Hi everyone,
new Disco owner here, and first post.
First of all, I must say, I am quiet impressed. I am a member of a few forums, but, this forum covers a lot of material, and everyone seems patient with the newbies such as myself.
I did do some searches for my questions on this stie, and some are answered, somewhat.
My first question, is probably gonna be the dumbest one yet!
I have a 99' Disco, which I just bought this past weekend, and there are some things that need to be fixed. THe first thing I don't understand is, how the heck do you turn on the big round fog's which are seated on the bull bar. Someone told me, to turn on the high beams, and flick the fog light switch, which I did, but, to no avail. Am I missing something?
The second question is the drivers side door lock. It doesn't work at all, except when I use the key directly. If I use the remote, all the other doors unlock except the drivers side (back and front) After reading numerous posts here, I came to the conclusion that the whole lock assembly must be changed. Is this correct. And, if I am, I'm living in Montreal, Canada, anyone know of any places where I can pick one up. My other problem is the drivers side window, which doesn't work at all.

There are more questions, but, I don't want to piss any of you guys off, which I'm sure I have already.

I'll answer your second part first. Do a search on door actuators. It's a very common problem for them to go out. The driver's side controls all the central locking. You can get an entire replacement for all of them nearly bolt in for about $40 US from Partsexpress.com. Search for my posts on this some time back. Also search for "door actuator" on their site. If you want an OE one, Dominic is the salvage guy in Canada. Though he's on the left coast, so you might want to just get one from a US source (Will Tillery, Marty AKA Drillbit).

Driver's window. Start with the switch. Two seconds to pop it out and try it in another location (i.e. passenger's side). If it doesn't work there. Bad switch. Easy. Try a working switch in the driver's side to test if it's a window regulator. There are other possible issues too.

Check to see if the fogs on the bull bar are even hooked up. Factory ones on my DII (the low ones) will only work on low. Just be patient and try a few options. They may be fused separately, so check a fuse. Do you have two fog light switches?

Good luck and hope this is a start.

PS. Put your make, model, year, etc. in your signature. You have a '99 DI or DII?

The Lou!
Check out the little button underneath the radio area that looks like a road (some think it looks like a picnic bench). Depress that button and see if ya got 'em.

wow
this is definitely one impressive board.
thankx all!!!
this weekend when i have some time, i'll do everything you guys mentioned. I really appreciate your help. it's guys like you that can
make or break a board.
my Disco is a series II (lol, i think, in the manual it says it's a series II). I guess that sorta makes me sound like a dorh, eh. well, I use to own a range rover classic LWB, and before that I use to own a Pinzgauer. So, I do have some 4x4'ing under my belt. But, just don't have a lot of experience with Discoveries. By the way, what's the difference between the Series I and Series II?
Again, I thank you very much.

There's a bigger difference between the DIs and DIIs than you'd imagine.

Here's a primer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Discovery

Also, here's the kit that includes the 5 wire driver's door actuator. But before you throw parts at it, there are a few easier possible fixes that could be an issues. Search and you'll see what I'm talking about. there's an alignment/spring kind of issue that's an easy fix and might save you some $

For parts for your Rover, there are several places south of you in the New England area, including Rovers North in Vermont and Atlantic British in NY State that can provide new parts for you. In Ontario, towards Toronto you will find Dominic (mentioned above) at www.landroversalvage.ca who can help you out with used parts as well as new ones if required. He's very helpful, give him a shout. And as mentioned, there are several other parts suppliers who hang out on Discoweb...

For the fog lights, try WITHOUT high beams. Usually, the fogs are disabled when high beams are on.

Good luck with the troubleshooting...

That's right, Dom's in Toronto. I was thinking he was in Vancouver for some reason. Guess he is a bit closer. RN and AB are also good places for new parts, though you'll start getting back closer toward dealer prices (though still not all the way!).

guys, again, thanx.
now, i have some research and work ahead of me.
i went to that link provided, and i'm going to order
the lock mechanism set. it makes a lot of sense to
get a set of 4, instead of 1 at a time. seeing as that
this seems to be a common problem with these trucks.
just out of curiosity (i have searched), regarding the rave cd.
i downloaded an image that was advertised as rave cd from
a torrent site, but, it was for rover cars. can anyone point
me in the right direction as to where i can download this
file.

Thanks again
Chris
oh, i'll be setting up my profile, with pics, stats etc this
coming weekend.

Be advised though these may require some tinkering for a DII. Most here have only tried them on DIs. Take some pics when you do it for the benefit of the board if you can. Might help someone else in your position down the road. Should basically be the same, but look here for more info:

http://discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37710

and here (this one has a wiring diagram for the DI which might be helpful):

Jim's link is spot on for the RAVE CD. It will be your friend.

will do, and thanks for the heads up on the lock actuators.. just out of cuirosity, when i take the pics, and jot down my notes on the installation, should i just post a new post, or is there a section where i should add my notes and pics. hmmm, did that make any sense?
i downloaded the rave cd as per link (thanks), i think i was able to download it in about 10 minutes. that is one very helpful cd.
and, after doing some reading on these trucks, all i can say is wow. i knew by owning a previous classic lwb these were impressive trucks. but, the Discovery is even more so. I can't wait to get my hands dirty. woohoo
oh, by the way, have i mentioned yet, you guys rock!!!

Nah, you can just tack it on to this post. If you wanted to do a detailed write up (which would awesome) then go ahead and put it in a new thread. Might make life a little easier for someone in the future. Either way someone should find it if they search (sigh)....

Best of luck.
