One of the rear pillar speaker died in my 98 D1...I spent an evening searching here and online for a simple, better, but cheap replacement.

I ended up with Pioneer TS G-1043R 4" 2-way speakers. No grill covers came with them but I ripped the original grill off the old speakers and reused them. Install was simple enough, but you seem to need to turn up the volume more to drive these new speakers, they give more bass too (more on this later)...sound is better than original with more clarity due to the 2-way design. Old speakers were just singles.

With this done I thought I can also just simply upgrade the front door speakers...keep in mind I still have the original headunit, underseat amp, and front pillar tweeters. The Car Toy dude talked me into Alpine SPS-410 4" for the door speakers, and they sounded better too (must turn up the volume higher than stock speakers), but the fit was not perfect (too deep). Since my D1 is old enough I didn't care much, also used the original grills, but the Alpine is about 1/4" too deep, so the grills are away from the flushed door surface about 1/4".

To reuse the old grills, you need to rip them off the original speakers - glued together but not hard to remove with some force. Just be careful you don't break the grill plastics as they are old and can disintegrate easily. Maybe you can actually find new 4" grills online someplace.

So the 4 new speakers don't sound as loud as the factory old speakers. I did this one side at a time and can tell the difference by shifting the Balance control. I do need to turn up the volume a bit more, then you get much better sound! I was amazed at the improvement from these relatively cheap speaker upgrades, makes one wonder why the 98 D1 HSE's premium sound was actually so bad...my guess is they used speaker designs from the 80's, and newer speakers with new materials are much better nowadays.

I do have a new problem thought...due to higher volume control to get good sound at similar level as the old speakers, the rear door subs are being driven harder, and they don't do well at all with crackling distortion and blah blah blah...like they say once you start this upgrade process, it can be endless...remember I started with the need to replaced a dead rear speaker....now I WANT to find better subs, and who knows, may be forced eventually to replace the amps and headunit...I do want Iphone integration as well.

I encountered many of the same issues in my '99 D1 and ended up bypassing the stock circuit and running a new circuit, replacing the amp and head unit. I removed the rear door panel and subs and am replacing it with aluminum diamond plate (Idea I borrowed from a friend). I replaced the subs with the Basslink powered unit from Infinity by sacrificing on of the cargo seats.

Good luck!
