my 96 discovery hates going through water or mud .after going through it will not idle or stay running blowes out smoke and runs lean and starts misfiring .it could be a inch or 2 ft of water no difrence if i catch it at the right point it will not idle or go .feels like not getting air, but air box and mass air are dry .??????????? any ideas out thier .i am catching a cam sensor code when it happens but the senser is fine and the conections are dry. 3rd time this has happen .but if i let it idle for a while (when it does idle )and shut it off it runs fine .

misfires after being thru water.. I would check the cap & rotor & ignition wires.. chances are once you dampen the engine bay you are causing a short... If you open the hood you might even hear the ignition grounding on something (zapping noise). when is the last time you did a good tune up? plugs, wires, filters (air & fuel) you might find frayed wires while you are doing this....

had a tune up less then 300 miles ... coil packs are dry as a bone. new wires plugs ,all conections coated with electrical contact grease.new fuel filter new coolant sensor, new fuel filter ,tps sensor .i pulled out the cam sensor cleaned it put new o-ring cleaned conections and still does it .all major work done .all conections have been cleaned from the injectors to the brake lamps .no zaping from ign wires run my hands up down them no shocks .

What about

Could it be a vac leak? Something small enough not to effect performance too much that it is not noticable when dry but when water gets sucked in, it effects the performance? Take a can of carb cleaner and spray it on the engine while running. If the engine revs up when the cleaner hits a certain spot then you have a vac leak there. Just a thought. I don't know if a small vac leak will throw a code during normal operation. If so, then I am way off.

i am going with trevor on this one. i pulled out the crank sensor cleaned it put a new seal and she is running good ......now should i seal it with some sealent and cover the conections with shrink rap so it doesnt happen again or should i load it up with contact grease .cam sensor behind w/pump was a bitch the first time .but i pulled that also and cleaned it.
