What do you folks think?

So last week, my wife is driving up the mountain, going under 50mph and she kicked it to pass someone. It downshifted properly and then she slid it down to "3" and continued on about 1/2 mile up the mountain and it started "losing power" and began to get hot. She pulled over immediately and shut the engine down.

After some cooling down (and a few phone calls), she popped the hood to find the raditor plug blow in half and laying on the manifold with part of the plug still threaded in, but a hole in it. Coolant appeared to be empty, serp was intact.

So, in a bit of a panic, I agreed to let her get it towed. The tow was about 10 miles and the guy claims to have towed "many" rovers and had it in neutral/neutral, so he says.

When I got to the garage, the truck would move in REV only, H or L. It will not move forward in any gear either H or L. I just filled the cooling system and ran all over the place here in REV, H and L. No forward action at all.

Other factors: The radiator is on it's way out, I have known. The truck does get warm in the summertime, going up hill with the AC on, but it doesn't overheat, AFAIK.

The AT and tcase fluid were changed a few months ago, but the AT fluid is not the typical red but it's not brown either. It smells okay, but not like what I would expect "newish" fluid to smell.

So, without tearing into it any further, I think the AT is dead.

But, the question is, can the B/W function in REV but now FWD? Seems like the tcase is okay.

its not the BW ...its the trans

I would guess that the trans was slipping and pumping a ton of heat into the radiator and the blown cap was a product of that.

What's the fluid like? I'll bet it's brown or black and smells like a campfire or refinery fire.

Dood! I've had my coffee, talked to two clients, finished one, wrote the bill, undercoated a DII, welded a cat heat shield back on and am in the process of replacing a DII trans temp switch.

I've billed almost two hours so far today!

I was awakened at 0515 by a cat banging against the bedroom door complaining that the food bowl was empty. Let's just say the dog food I put in their bowl was NOT acceptable. I was waiting at the grocery store door when they opened to buy a lousy bag/can of cat food and a dozen eggs!

Same damn thing happened to me over the summer... Noticed it when I went into the garage and saw a drip-drip. Opened the hood and the plug was blown just like yours. Total PITA to extract the remnants...

Was a total mystery as to the cause - water pump good, hoses good, fan coupling good. Refilled coolant and went on my way.

Couple weeks later and mysterious overheating would occur only on hot, humid days - posted on that elsewhere here. Bought anew radiator from Cambo and thermostat as precaution.

Hasn't overheated once since parts arrived, coolant level constant ever since. Me thinks there was a slight air bubble from when I refilled after plug let go and it worked its way out.

My tranny failed the same way as yours - no forward, only reverse after driving home from errands.

Mike, make me an offer on the 93 lwb! You can have the AT, LT230, and a rust free Georgia truck!
No guarantees on the motor, though....;)
