Rover dealer

GO to your Rover dealer and ask for the part numbers I listed.
Unless you have something weird happening....It will fix your problem.

Rovers North can get those parts.

Give those part numbers to Rovers North and they can get them.

They may not know what they are (I've done that to them once or twice, they are good natured about it) but with the Rover part numbers, they can get it.

Dont be too nervous about swapping PROMs. You really open up the ECM, unplug the old one from it's socket and plug in the new one.

Let me know how it works out.

Cold start

Brian...did you see my comments? Have someone check the fuel pressure on the injectors. When you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump primes the injectors..they should hold thier pressure...if they lose it gradually, it's the injector.

email me for more discussion...gwinder@yamaha.com

Hi!! Yes I did and the Disco is with the dealer right now getting tested and tweaked for the Ottawa winter - although it really has not been that cold yet.
Sorry for not answering sooner but I have been in the hospital since Dec 01 - my 52nd Bday (not looking for sympathy here but not the greatest way the spend a day planned with libation and good eating) - with a blood problem. On the mend though and getting back into the thick of things.

Listen tio Chris!!! He has the answer! Got the Dosco back last Saturday, long story, and after insisting they comlpete the changes outlined by Chris it starts no proble.
Temperatures were at -10C all weekend. Overnight, out and about. Not a single problem with starting and warming up.

Thank you for your advice Chris.

Wonderful.

Glad to hear it worked. That bulletin is like 9 years old. I'm suprised the cars that need to be updated aren't by now. Unless you car is a transplant.

Again, your welcome. Happy to help.

93-95 Classic and discovery has a update "Cold Start" kit to adress flooding under 20 degrees F.

The Service bulletin number is 19/13/96/US

THis is for pre Gems cars (95-back)

Let me sum up the fix.

1. Change the oil to 5-30

2. Replace the starter with the updated unit (Land Rover Part Number ERR6087K)

3. Replace Battery Cables with thicker units (Land Rover Part Number PRC5235K-Neg and AMR4803K- Potive and the Starter to ground cable number AMR1057K)

4. Replace PROM with part number PRM3652.

5. Reaplce Spade type terminals at coil with crimp on eyelet type.

6. Set base idle correctly.

This is a good fix, I have done many at the dealer.

Also, the PROM for the 4.2 is PRM3653.

It pisses me off endlessly that I have had cold-start problems for years, and all the local dealer has *ever* done is charge me silly amounts money to replace parts including ignition module, coil, cap, rotor, wires, etc. Of course the truck starts fine after sitting in there garage for a few days, and they send it back as fixed, only to be screwed again next time it's cold out. It does seem that fresh plugs, wires, cap, rotor & coil give enough of a "boost" to overcome the flooding issue that the PROM corrects *most* of the time, but why can't freaking dealerships actually *read* and *understand* their own service bulletins, especially when they are charging $100+ for there "expert" service?

They *never* changed the PROM or updated the starter! I finally found out about and ordered the PROM myself (still need to install it). If not for Chris, I still would not know about the starter, and evidently my dealer still doesn't know :-(

I love my Disco, but our local LR service departments have convinced me to never buy another LR product.

I'm still debating wether it is worth risking having them touch my truck to replace the fuel tank...

Thaks PFB! Your making me blush. :)

Your right though, alot of dealer techs simply don't take advantage of the resources given to them. The classes are very good, and Rovers documentation is top shelf.

It's there, they just have to look.

I get calls all day from techs in the feild that simply didn't do their research, and the customer is the one who suffers.

I am super happy that the PROM got your problem licked. This fix is 9-10 years old. There is no reason that any dealer tech in a cold part of the country does know about it.

I can tell you, At the dealer in St Louis, I knew about recalls on some Clasics that they never heard of. I couldn't believe it...Untill I worked there for a little longer.

But, thats a discussion for another day.

Thank you again for your kind words.

There is a sticker that the tech SHOULD put on the ECM to indicate the new part number.

Most don't.

You can look at yoru chip to tell, but if it starts cold, your likely ok.

The rich burning maybe another symptom of the Code 15 you have on your other post.
