where i'm at right now, duh...
I'm running GBR 4.11's up front with toyota 4.10 in the rear, and 285/75/16 BFG KM2's. I love the way my truck wheels in the rocks with the KM2's, but hate the way it drives on the freeway. Not the handling, but the speed... I can't keep up with my friends doing 70-75 without running over 3k RPM's...

I'll be going on a 7 day mini expo down to Death Valley with some Land cruiser guys in February and I wanted to look into a bit larger size tire for trips such as this one. I won't be able to keep up with these guys flying down the freeway at 70- 75 on a long distance trip like that with my current gear/tire size.

So my thought is to get some BFG AT's in a 315/75/16, which would help me come back down near stock. I'm worried about how much I'm going to have to trim though. I don't want to hack up the fenders so they look like shit. Right now I know that I'm going to have to get and A-frame extension, but the trailing arms should be long enough to move the axle back a bit.

KM2's for the hard trails, and larger AT's for the long distance expo trips. Good, bad, what say you? Is there an AT tire out there in a little bit smaller size than 315/75/16 that may work better so I don't have to trim as much?

Try running 33x12.50s with 4.75s. A new crank seal would last me about a month on that truck, and with little to no interior, no gear, no rack, 11 MPG.

Get a set of fender flares from Lucky8.

What is there to go 'huh?' about?

Do you have a roof rack? If yes, then just put your larger tires up there instead of making a trip with them on the truck.

haha:smilelol: I just didn't understand what you were saying.

I think you're confused. I don't like the way my truck revs up high on freeway speeds. If I'm going to be driving it on long distance trips, I need to find a bit larger tire to swap out. I'm going to have two sets of tires, one set of 33" km2's for hard trails, and then a set of larger AT's for my long distance expo style trips out in the desert.

The whole tires on the rack thing is confusing me. I'll change out the tires depending on what trip I'm going on at home before I leave.

I don't see the purpose of running around on my KM2's all the time waisting gas (and the tires) when I can get a bit larger AT and coast around the freeway on those.

In my 98 with a 4.0, 4.11s, and SD rack and 33x12.5s I'm doing around 90 at 3100RPM, granted that's at a lower elevation that you, at 60-70 I'm at around 2250-2500rpm. I get between 12 and 13mpg no matter what speed I go in high range unless I'm in deep sand or silt.

i think i might have touched on this on the other site, but i roll with 4.11 and 235/85 and it revs high but the truck doesnt complain and gas is not an issue it sucks either way.

i understand a preference thing, but i think the rover can handle the high revs all day without worry. Its quite peppy in that range.

Could someone explain whats wrong with driving around at 3,500 RPM at 75mph? Thats not that High. I have had a few older Audi's and they are all above 3k RPM at that speed. At 80mph my 4000quattro pulled almost 4k RPM. Granted it ran up to 6,500 but the rover is perfectly happy at 3k RPM. AT least it seems to be.

I have the opposite problem. Even with 235/85-16 (31's) I find that my car is geared to High and I cant keep it in the powerband. So I end up in 3rd gear all the time.

i'm gonna be moving up to 4.11s in the next year or so. don't have the cash ATM, but i'll be happy to have some top end power back for the highway. my foot is to the floor with a 4.6 and 33's at 75-80 MPH (2700 RPM).

65-70 mph around 2000-2300 RPM is nice, but passing is horrible.

EDIT: those speeds are GPS corrected...

Man there is some interesting advice here. You're perfectly fine with tires and ratio you have. These trucks don't mind 3k at all. I have pretty much the same setup as you (33's and 4.11's) and it's perfect. Just get used to it and you'll learn to love it. 75 should be no problem. I do it all the way to Utah.

I have 4.11s with 255/85 KM2s. I'm just below 2500 rpms at 70. Weird.

Brain fart... I used to turn 2700 rpm at 70 with 285s and 411's
